England 1 Spain 2 LIVE RESULT: Gareth Southgate future latest after heartbreaking Euro 2024 final loss – updates

ENGLAND hearts were broken by Mikel Oryazabal as Spain struck late to win Euro 2024.

The Three Lions had belief after Cole Palmer stroked home a brilliant equaliser after Nico Williams scored moments after the break.

But it was Spain, who had arguably been the best team at the tournament, who held on to win a FOURTH European Championship.

  • England 1-1 Spain

    82. Big chance for Spain to take the lead.

Williams does brilliantly in the build-up and Yamal finds himself with a clear sight of goal.

He gets a left-footed shot away but it is too close to Pickford, who makes the save.

  • England 1-1 Spain

    80. As we move into the final ten minutes of the Euro 2024 final, you feel a goal now would win this game.

Neither side is going into their shell as they try to find a second goal.

England seem to be playing more with two strikers now as Palmer supports Watkins up top.

  • England 1-1 Spain

    78. Many called for Cole Palmer to be playing more in this tournament and in the last two games he has showed why.

The Chelsea youngster is a real talent and should be starting in any side.

  • England 1-1 Spain

    76. That goal has changed the whole complexion of this game.

Spain look rattled and it is now England who are in the ascendency.

This game has come to life now with only fifteen minutes of normal time remaining.

  • England 1-1 Spain

    74. England break as Cucurella leaves Spain short in defence.

The ball is played into Watkins in the box, who cushions a pass into the path of Palmer outside the box.

Palmer passes the ball into the bottom corner to send the English fans into raptures.

  • England 0-1 Spain

    72. There seems a lot more industry up front for England already with Ollie Watkins on the pitch.

He is looking to make runs in behind the defence and asking serious questions of the Spanish centre-backs.

So far, England have struggled to produce that killer-pass to find the Aston Villa striker.

  • England 0-1 Spain

    70. Stones heads a cross behind for a corner, under little pressure.

Spain whip the ball in and Pickford gets a glancing punch to it.

La Roja recycle the ball once again but as Ruiz shoots from distance, it goes harmlessly over the bar.

  • England 0-1 Spain

    68. Spain replace Morata for Oyarzabal.

He is not a striker who ever seems full of goals, despite all the chances the Atletico Madrid man gets.

de la Fuente is probably looking for a bit more from his striker in this second-half.

  • England 0-1 Spain

    66. A searching ball is played towards Watkins in the box.

Le Normand looks to head it behind but seemingly gets nothing on the ball.

As a result, Spain are awarded a goal kick, despite the protests from Watkins.

Spain counter-attack, Yamal beats Shaw all too easily and gets a shot away into the bottom corner but Pickford turns it wide of the post.

    Close.

  • England 0-1 Spain

    64. Bellingham turns brilliantly outside the box to send two Spain players to the shops.

He gets a left-footed shot away, struck with some venom, which narrowly misses the goal.

Great play from Bellingham, something England need to see more of in this second-half.

  • England 0-1 Spain

    62. England are starting to probe the Spanish defence more now.

Passing the ball around, looking for breaches to exploit.

Saka goes down under the challenge of Williams and referee awards a free kick in a wide position.

As ever, Saka goes down like it is a career-ending injury.

  • England 0-1 Spain

    60. The one thing English fans take heart from is that there is plenty of time remaining in this game to find an equaliser.

Foden gets down the right and crosses but there is no one in the box to get on the end of it, story of Harry Kane's night.

Ollie Watkins comes on to replace the Bayern Munich striker.

Luke Shaw's first mistake of an impressive performance and England go behind.

They're on the ropes now, giving the ball away and giving up chances. It could be at least three by now.

Marc Guehi just went spare at his team-mates after being forced into a big block on Alvaro Morata.

It's unravelling a bit. England have done nothing going forward in this half and the fans are singing for Ollie Watkins.

  • England 0-1 Spain

    58. Southgate looks ready to make some changes.

Ollie Watkins is stripped off and ready to come on.

You would have to assume that it is Harry Kane who will make way.

  • Heads drop as Spain break deadlock

The reaction of the England fans as Nico Williams scored summed it up very well from an English perspective.

Nobody was expecting such a start to the second half.

This will test Gareth Southgate's side and fans equally now.

  • England 0-1 Spain

    56. England are making some schoolboy errors in defence.

Gifting the ball to Spain in dangerous areas of the pitch.

On this occasion, Morata looks to get a shot away from the edge of the box but it is well blocked.

Spain recycle the ball and the forward has another chance, with only Pickford to beat.

He looks to slide it past the England keeper but Stones is there to clear.

Southgate's side cannot get out of their own half as Williams tries his luck from outside the box, narrowly missing the far post, with Pickford beaten.

  • England 0-1 Spain

    54. Zubimendi looks to get past Stones and the England man is booked for blatantly pulling him back.

Williams was in acres of space out on the left if he had managed to get his pass away.

Stones obviously saw that and decided to 'take one for the team'.

  • England 0-1 Spain

    52. England have it all to do now.

As they commit more players forward it will leave them open to the counter-attack from Spain.

That could be troublesome with the pace of their wingers.

Walker looks to swing in a cross from the touchline out on the right but it goes out for a throw-in on the opposite side of the pitch.

  • England 0-1 Spain

    50. Massive chance for Spain to double their lead.

Williams is the creator on this occasion and finds Olmo in a dangerous position in the box, most importantly, in space.

The Spanish midfielder snatches at his chance and drags it well wide of the far post, much to the relief of Jordan Pickford.

  • England 0-1 Spain

    48. Yamal picks the ball up on the right as Shaw is caught out of position.

He plays a perfectly-weighted pass into the path of Williams, who side foots his effort into the bottom corner.

The worst possible start England fans could have hoped for.

  • Goal - Nico Williams (Spain)

  • England 0-0 Spain

    46. The big news from the interval is that Rodri has come off.

Zubimendi has replaced the influential midfielder.

England fans will be hoping this plays to their advantage.

  • Kick-off: England 0-0 Spain

We are back underway at Olympiastadion Berlin.

Fans will be crying out for more shots at goal in this half.

    Spain get the game restarted.

Half time is DJ time, apparently. Oh good. And of course it's a sponsored segment. Any German makers of sausages, beer and potatoes who would like to sponsor my new waistline are welcome to approach my agent.

Meanwhile we've had 45 minutes of not quite entertainment. England were under the cosh in the first 10 minutes, gained a foothold in the game but never had control of it.

Spain have not really threatened and were reduced to tossing in crosses towards the end of the half.

England have not made the most of the possession they have had. Harry Kane does not look right and the yellow card he earned for a lunge on Fabian Ruiz may lead to him being taken off sooner than usual.

Luke Shaw has had a really good game, keeping Lamine Yamal quiet. On the other flank, the battle between Kyle Walker and Nico Williams is fun to watch.

A better-informed football person than me comments: "Spain dominate the ball which OK if we can control those spells then find a way of keeping the ball and beating Spain's initial press. Get it wide to Saka."

The Arsenal winger has looked like England's best outlet and hopeful of getting more change of poor, persecuted Marc Cucurella in the second half.

    The music remains dismal.
