England 1 Spain 2 LIVE RESULT: Gareth Southgate future latest after heartbreaking Euro 2024 final loss – updates

ENGLAND hearts were broken by Mikel Oryazabal as Spain struck late to win Euro 2024.

The Three Lions had belief after Cole Palmer stroked home a brilliant equaliser after Nico Williams scored moments after the break.

But it was Spain, who had arguably been the best team at the tournament, who held on to win a FOURTH European Championship.

  • HT: England 0-0 Spain

Kane continues to drop deep looking for the ball, leaving England with no focal point in the box.

Many pundits have spoken about how he used to do this at Tottenham, to great effect, but that worked as Son Heung-min would drop into the centre forward role.

Nobody does that for England and they just look like another team in the modern game playing without a striker.

Considering he is on a yellow card, you wonder whether it could be time to see the introduction of Ollie Watkins, England's saviour in Dortmund.

A cagey game. England fans are still in good voice.

That moment when Kyle Walker charged back and Nico Williams sidestepped him was straight out of the bullring.

England have let Spain have a lot of possession but they've not done much with it. England need to keep the ball better.

There was also a moment a little while ago when Bellingham won a flick on and was annoyed that Harry Kane wasn't running on to it.

Bellingham is putting in a lot of hard yards but some of his sliding tackles feel unnecessarily dramatic.

Laporte feeling the force of a collision with Rodri. As you would. He's a unit.

  • HT: England 0-0 Spain

Somehow, Spain have had a shot on target that we seem to have missed in that first half.

The two sides have showed intent to get efforts off at goal, but in most cases the opposition have done well to get blocks in.

Both keepers have had very quiet halves, that surely must change after the interval.

  • HT: England 0-0 Spain

The referee brings the first half to a close.

It is all square in Berlin.

Some big team talks needed by both managers now.

  • England 0-0 Spain

45+2. Rice clips a free kick into the box.

Spain try to head clear but the flicked effort drops to Foden wide of the goal.

He hits on the volley but Simon is equal to it.

That is the first shot on target of the Euro 2024 final.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    45. It looks like nothing can separate these two teams as we head towards the interval.

Bellingham does well to dispossess Spain of the ball and plays a great pass to Kane on the edge of the box.

He immediately looks to get a shot away but it is well blocked by Rodri.

We are going to have two added minutes.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    43. When Spain look to counter, England are getting numbers back quickly to reduce their options.

Saka did well earlier, cutting inside onto his left foot, but really picked the wrong option when Mainoo was calling for the ball.

This game is finely poised as it stands and, for the neutral, you wonder whether it needs a goal to open this match up.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    41. Stones goes on a run through the middle of the park.

Spain win the ball back and look to counter with England missing a centre back.

Rice drops in to cover for his teammate, who must still be feeling a bit tender after the boot he received to the ribs earlier.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    39. Wiliams has started drifting over to the right wing now.

It is causing an overload as Shaw has both him and Yamal to deal with.

Le Normand puts in a heavy challenge on Bellingham as they contest a 50/50 tackle.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    37. Williams checks onto his right foot and bends in a cross into the box.

Spain seem to have a lack of numbers up with him and the ball curls out harmlessly for a goal kick.

Nobody was attacking the back post there for La Roja.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    35. Yamal runs at Shaw for the first time but the England full-back gets a timely challenge in to put it out for a corner.

Williams bends one in but as Le Normand rises to try and win the header it deflects off Guehi for a corner.

Rice seemed to trip Laporte in the melee there but neither the referee nor VAR see anything needing any action.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    33. Southgate is sending out his subs often to warm-up already.

It may be psychological games by the England manager.

Foden goes down as he challenges Ruiz for the ball.

The replay shows that the Spanish midfielder just stood on his foot there.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    31. Stones has looked assured on the ball here in Berlin.

Spain look to counter and Williams plays a lovely flick to Morata, cutting out the England midfield.

Fortunately the Spanish forward's touch is a heavy one and England get the ball back.

Olmo is then booked for catching Rice in his side with studs as they both challenged for the ball.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    29. Ruiz has a little space and tries to get a shot off from the edge of the box.

Guehi manages to get a block in and the ball ricochets kindly for England as Pickford gathers.

It has been quite a cagey start to the game, with neither side willing to throw big numbers forward.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    27. Fabian Ruiz receives some treatment for the challenge by the England skipper.

The replay shows Kane seems to slip but does catch the midfielder with his studs up.

Walker is doing a great job of giving Williams no time whatsoever on the ball now.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    25. Saka goes down in the middle of the park under a heavty challenge.

England are demanding a yellow card for the Spaniard but the referee is not interested at all.

Shaw almost gets some joy on the edge of the box but Spain just about manage to hack the ball clear.

Kane is then shown a yellow card for a lunging challenge on the edge of the box.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    23. This has been a very even contest so far.

Neither keeper could convince a partner that they have been in work this evening at this point.

Walker seems to have shaken off that knock and is keeping a close eye on Williams.

Yamal gets the chance to swing a cross in but it is too close to Pickford who comes to gather.

Spain manage to win the ball back and force another corner but once again the delivery is poor and England clear their lines.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    21. Cucurella gets the ball stuck under his feet and goes down under the challenge of Saka as he looks to pass it.

The Chelsea defender can often make the slightest of touches seem like he has stepped on a landmine.

This time he is penalised for a foul on Foden deep in the English half.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    19. Spain are looking a little sketchy at the back.

When England come forward and put some sustained pressure on them, they do not look confident.

While all the focus has been on how the Three Lions deal with the Spanish wingers, the wide areas seem to be key for Southgate's side to attack.

Both Cucurella and Carvajal can be suspect in defence and prefer going forward.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    17. England win their first corner of the game as Walker gets to the byline and looks to cut one back.

He doesn't seem to have any niggling injury the way he ran after that one.

However, Foden's cross is flatter than a pub in Amsterdam this evening and easily dealt with.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    15. Williams is seeing a lot of the ball in the early stages.

Yamal has barely had a touch as Shaw marshalls him well.

Walker seems to be struggling with an injury from earlier and Trippier is out on the touchline warming up.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    13. Walker commits himself out wide and cannot cut out the pass down the wing to Williams.

He squares up Stones and steps over the ball, looking to take his man on.

The Man City defender does brilliantly to get a challenge in to block the cross, at the expense of another corner.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    11. First chance for England to get a good delivery into the box.

Guehi is penalised for a foul on Laporte.

The cross picked out Stones well but the referee awards Spain a free kick.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    9. England now are taking the chance to pass the ball around.

Eventually, they look for another direct ball out to the flank.

It is half-cleared, then Rodri is penalised for a foul on Bellingham.

  • Fans belt out 'God Save the King'

Just before kick-off the English fans sang the national anthem with some real vigour.

Ready for the challenge that lies ahead.

Letting their team know they, and all the country, are behind them.
