England 1 Spain 2 LIVE RESULT: Gareth Southgate future latest after heartbreaking Euro 2024 final loss – updates

ENGLAND hearts were broken by Mikel Oryazabal as Spain struck late to win Euro 2024.

The Three Lions had belief after Cole Palmer stroked home a brilliant equaliser after Nico Williams scored moments after the break.

But it was Spain, who had arguably been the best team at the tournament, who held on to win a FOURTH European Championship.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    7. Spain force the first corner of the game as a Williams cross is put behind by Stones.

As the winger whips in the corner it is easily dealt with by the English defence as Foden hooks it clear.

Spain's winger will look to get a lot of crosses into the box this evening so it is vital that England deal with them well.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    5. England are looking to give Spain no time on the ball.

It seems a tactic they have been set by Southgate and is causing the Spaniards to have to think quickly.

That said, they are not opting for a high-press and the Spanish defence are having a lot of time on the ball.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    3. Spain look comfortable in possession, as you would expect.

Laporte plays the ball out wide to Yamal but Shaw gets in well to win the ball off him.

As England come forward, La Roja win it back so England look to pen them into their own half.

  • England 0-0 Spain

    1. England look to go direct from the off.

Drifting a long pass out to the flank, looking for Saka.

There is just too much on the pass as it runs harmlessly out of play for a goal kick.

  • Kick-off: England vs Spain

We are underway in Olympiastadion Berlin.

The stadium is a cauldron of noise.

    England get the game started.

  • The light at the end of the tunnel

As the players walk out onto the pitch, they will see the Holy Grail that they are playing to take home.

With the trophy gleaming in the Berlin sunshine, the stakes could not be higher.

This is a chance to write your name in history.

    Very Superbowl vibes, this.

Loved that wavey blue arm thing from the dancers spelling out Euro 2024.

The fans have now held up their multi-coloured placards and the subs took their spots on the bench as the band were playing.

Not long to go now, how are the nerves everyone?

I know I should know who these people are.

Ah, One Republic, a young person tells me.

    Are they German?

Totally OK song. But utterly superfluous to proceedings.

The male singer also displaying that worrying modern trend of buying trousers too short for him and then forgetting to wear sensible socks.

It is this sort of thing that brought down the Roman Empire.

  • Fans all ready for the off

The atmosphere is at fever-pitch in the stadium, fan parks and up and down the country.

Both England and Germany is basked in sunshine and the drinks are flowing.

We're about to have the closing ceremony of the tournament, 15 minutes before kick-off.

An enormous white tarpaulin has been laid across the pitch with different colours on it and a stage is being prepared.

Fans have been given a placard, each with a different colour, to hold up during it to show how football is for everyone.

    Quite right.

  • Skipper with chance to top charts

Although a victory, by any means, will be the only thing on his mind at the moment.

Harry Kane has the chance to finish at the top of the tree when it comes to the Euro 2024 scoring charts.

A big performance from the England skipper tonight could mean killing two birds with one stone.

    Now it's Hey Jude.

Some staff dressed all in white have emerged for what will presumably be an unnecessarily more elaborate than usual pre-match ceremony.

Maybe Uefa should spend more on, you know, another couple of airport-style security scanners at each stadium, to half the queuing times? Just a thought.

On the Jude tip, you hope he's got one more big performance left in the season of his life.

There's been a lot of focus on Yamal. But if Bellingham and England deliver tonight, he will surely win the Ballon d'Or at the age of just 21.

  • La Roja ready for challenge

Despite England fans being in such confident mood, Spain come into this game as the only team with a 100% record.

They feel this is their time to start a new generation and seal a trophy with so much young talent.

Luis de la Fuente will be hoping he can break some English hearts this evening in Berlin.

It's almost as if Sean Dyche has picked this England team. First seven players, numbers one to seven, then Kane at 9, Bellingham at 10, Foden at 11. Only Kobbie Mainoo wearing a shirt bigger than his age with the number 26.

Luke Shaw in at No 3. That's the big talking point

Russell Cook aka Hardest Geezer gives his usual message.

And, about bloody time, it's Three Lions.

  • Nerves run high, even with the pundits

As the ITV pundits look down from their elevated position, you can see just how tense things are with everyone.

Ex-England internationals Ian Wright and Gary Neville look down to the Olympiastadion pitch.

With just under half an hour until kick-off, this could be the biggest evening for so many of these players and fans.

One thing you would say is that Gareth Southgate seems to have better options off the bench than Luis de la Fuente.

That's partly because he is two players down, due to the injuries to Pedri and Ayoze Perez.

A singer called David Bisbal is delivering the celebrity message to the Spanish team. No, me neither. Perhaps that is just another example of English arrogance.

Unfortunately, we're now back to the dance music. More than happy to Bluetooth from my phone, DJ. Altogether now: 'We're on our way, we are Ron's 22, hear the roar of the red, white and blue..."

  • Chance to make the pain stop

It was 28 years ago that Gareth Southgate missed one of the pivotal penalties that saw Germany knock them out at the semi-final stage.

Since then, the trauma has never been far away from the mind of the man himself.

Tonight he can change it all by winning England's first trophy since the World Cup in 1966.

Spain come out to a pleasingly loud chorus of boos. Their fans seem to know what this song is, but I am too old and wise.

Pictures of Lamine Yamal on the big screen. As SunSport columnist Jack Wilshere said, the only real comparison in football history is Pele.

Yamal was 17 yesterday. Team-mate Jesus Navas, 38, could quite easily and decently be his dad. Yamal has shown absolutely no fear so far, and you don't expect him to start now.

That pesky Giorgio Chiellini has been causing mischief again.

The Italian legend, who helped break England's hearts in the last final, is doing punditry for Italian TV here.

Embarrassingly, a number of journalists were queuing up for selfies with him in the press room.

But Chiellini has had a cheeky little dig towards the England fans before kick-off, commenting: "It takes me back, seeing the English so enthusiastic and happy, remembering how quickly their mood can change."

    Mamma mia, Giorgio!

  • Fans enjoy Berlin sunshine

Over the course of the tournament we have seen some biblical downpours but the sun is out for the final.

England fans are enjoying every moment of the occasion, belting out the songs outside the ground.

If the team shows half the passion of the fans, it may well be coming home this evening.

  • Dreams can come true

This is what both squads are hoping they get their hands on in Olympiastadion Berlin.

One team will be partying long into the night and taking this beautiful trophy home with them.

The other may just be drowning sorrows.

Lot of Spurs fans among the England supporters it appears, given how they're belting out Robbie Williams' Angels right now...

That classic has become a regular theme tune at Tottenham this season due to Ange Postecoglou mania, with a little twist to "loving Big Ange instead".

Call me soppy, but it's actually pretty spine-tingling as the Three Lions fans belt it out while Gareth Southgate's squad walk out onto the pitch.

Hold on, it's Three Lions on the loudspeaker now... drink it in...

  • View from SunSport's Dan King in Berlin

The England players are in the tunnel waiting to come out for their warmout.

Perhaps they want Angels to finish first. Kieran Trippier's face is giving nothing away after giving way to Luke Shaw in the starting line up.

He is sure to have a part to play at some point, you feel.

Here come England, led by Harry Kane. And it's a great reception, any Spanish jeers drowned out by the huge number of English fans who are here.

  • View from SunSport's Dan King in Berlin

The atmosphere is hotting up, in the concourse at least.

Plenty of renditions of the Phil Foden song, with the word Spanish replacing the Germans they dumped out in the quarters. Rowdy, tops off stuff, but nothing more than boisterous fun.

The stands themselves are relatively empty still as most of the crowd joins the massive queues for food and drink.

The DJ is persisting with pretty mindless dance music at the moment. SunSport maintained its own pre-match tradition by playing and singing and dancing along to This Time, Back Home and World In Motion while on the journey from Spandau to the Olympiastadion. Nerves starting to kick in now, though.

    Finally some crowd-pleasing tunes.

First one for the Mancs in the England team, it's the daddy long-legs of dad rock: Wonderwall.

  • View from SunSport's Tom Barclay in Berlin

They're belting out Oasis classic Wonderwall over the loudspeaker in the Olympiastadion now - with thousands of England fans singing the words in unison.

Three Lions supporters also gave the Spanish goalkeepers a hostile reception as they came out to warm up.

The rest of the players should be out fairly shortly for their pre-match preparations on the pitch, including Luke Shaw who is starting instead of Kieran Trippier.

Gareth Southgate gambled by taking the injured left-back to the tournament.

Could it be about to pay off in a big on Shaw's first start since February 18 - if he can shackle 17-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal?
