They held off a strong challenge from the Netherlands to win by 1.08 seconds.

Sholto Carnegie, Rory Gibbs, Morgan Bolding, Jacob Dawson, Charles Elwes, Tom Digby, James Rudkin and Tom Ford crossed the line in a time of 5:22.88.

Cox Harry Brightmore was on his feet in the boat after Britain crossed the line first to hit double figures for the Games.

The eight rowers were jubilant but exhausted after an incredible effort.

Dawson said: "Massive mix of emotions.

"There is a bit of sadness that this is the end, but complete and total elation that we have finished off this project in the right way."

Carnegie added: "It was a long wait because we were sort of the last ones to go down the track.

"Seeing everyone else get their medals means that you learn from it and you can look at things that they did really well, but there were times where we just wanted to get racing.

"We have stuck together and worked so hard since Tokyo, but it still hasn't sunk in. I can't really believe this is real!"

It gave a golden ending to a sensational team effort with Britain winning eight medals - including three golds - from just 10 boats across the regatta.

Team GB Olympic silver medallist rower Jess Eddie told  BBC Radio 5 Live: "These are giants of the rowing world. The biggest and fastest guys.

"That was an absolute masterclass. They were never troubled, the Dutch threw everything at them. It was water off a duck's back.

"GB looked the strongest boat out there. It is GOLD!"

Team USA took bronze.

Earlier this morning, Team GB's women's eight won bronze as favourites Romania stormed to gold.

Heidi Long, Rowan McKellar, Holly Dunford, Emily Ford, Lauren Irwin, Eve Stewart, Harriet Taylor and Annie Campbell-Orde rowed a superb race.

But Romania and Canada, who took silver, had very strong crews.

Ford said: "The whole way we just trusted one another and trusted the process.

"We have really learned to have belief in ourselves and that's exactly what we did.

"I think this medal is more than for just us lot standing here - it's for people past and present, our family, and all of our support network.

"Anyone that has got ambition: go out there, believe in yourselves and you can do it."
