F1 Monaco Grand Prix LIVE RESULTS: Perez WINS after holding off Sainz as fuming Leclerc suffers pit stop chaos

SERGIO PEREZ won the Monaco Grand Prix as he capitalised on a flawed Ferrari pit stop strategy to hold off Carlos Sainz.

Initial race leader Charles Leclerc was told to stay out on track by Ferrari when he was already in the pit lane, causing him to be overtaken by Perez, Sainz and title rival Max Verstappen.

Mexican Perez then managed to hold Sainz off in the final laps to secure a famous race win.

  • Lap 21 - Hamilton battling

Lewis Hamilton is all over the back of Esteban Ocon.

Ocon for now is holding firm, as Hamilton asks his team if Ocon is being investigated for his aggressive defence.

The answer to that is no, for now.

  • Lap 19 - Leclerc and Verstappen pit

The two championship favourites are in to the pits.

It means Carlos Sainz now leads the Monaco Grand Prix.

Sainz looks like he's going to stay out and wait for slicks, instead of going in for the intermediates.

  • Lap 18 - Hamilton potential problem

That's a close shave for Lewis Hamilton.

His front wing makes contact with the back of Esteban Ocon, but it looks like he's escaped any damage.

  • Lap 17 - Perez in the pits

The P3 Sergio Perez is now also in the pits.

His Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen is yet to go in.

Perez comes back out in P5, just behind Lando Norris.

  • Lap 16 - Hamilton pits

Lewis Hamilton is into the pits for the first time.

He switches from the wets onto the intermediate tyres.

  • Lap 16 - Gasly still flying

Pierre Gasly has now set the fastest lap time of the race.

    He clocks a 1:31:25.

    Impressive stuff.

  • Lap 14 - Gasly on the charge

Pierre Gasly is going along nicely here.

First he passed Zhou Guanyu, and now he's just edged in front of Daniel Ricciardo.

The AlphaTauri man is now up to P12.

  • Not a lot happening

After all the drama before the race, not much has actually gone on since the first green flag.

Charles Leclerc is just extending his lead slightly by every lap.

He's now over five seconds ahead of Carlos Sainz with the race 13 laps old.

  • George Russell on the attack

Mercedes man George Russell is closing on fellow Brit Lando Norris in P5.

    He's about a second behind.

Meanwhile up front Charles Leclerc is 3.4secs ahead of Carlos Sainz.

  • Some starting to pit

Some of the drivers are starting to pit now to switch to the intermediate tyres.

One of those being Sebastian Vettel.

Pierre Gasly is another on the intermediates.

None of the leaders have switched from the wets as of yet, but that could change in the next couple of laps.

  • Skies still grey

The skies are still grey over Monaco.

But the rain is holding off for now.

  • Pace increasing in Monaco

The track drying up means the lap times are getting quicker.

Charles Leclerc has clocked a new fastest time.

    He posts a 1:39:679.

  • Hamilton on the radio

Lewis Hamilton tells his Mercedes team that the track is drying up nicely.

But at the moment it's very slippery out there.

He says over the radio: "It's definitely slippery, but it's drying pretty quick I'd say."

  • Leclerc clocks fastest lap

Ferrari man Charles Leclerc is setting the early pace in Monaco.

The hometown hero clocks a 1:43:218 lap.

He's already opened up around a two-second lead from team-mate Carlos Sainz.

  • Green flag - we are racing!

The safety car pulls into the pits, and now we are racing!

It's a rolling start in Monaco.

Bizarrely it seems as though the race has started without any real incident.

Charles Leclerc maintains his lead, ahead of team-mate Carlos Sainz.

  • Nearly ready to go

So technically we are two laps into this race, both of which have been behind the safety car.

But the drivers are not actually racing as of yet.

  • A crash for Latifi

Nicholas Latifi has gone straight into the barriers at the hairpin.

Over the radio the Williams driver says the car "wouldn't turn" as he went into the hairpin.

Lance Stroll has a puncture on one of his rear-tyres too.

    Absolute mayhem.

  • Back out on the track

The drivers are back out on the track!

They are behind the safety car, and the two-hour race clock has started.

  • Drivers in position

Right then, just over an hour later than scheduled, we are finally nearing the start of the race.

The safety car will lead the drivers out.

The rain, for now, has stopped.

But McLaren are telling Daniel Ricciardo over the radio that more rain could come in five minutes time.

  • We have lift off - restart at 15:05

The rain has finally eased off and the sun is shining through once again.

The drivers are coming out of the pits to their cars.

    Restart set for 15:05

  • Rain continues to fall in Monaco

Gazebos have been erected in the pit lane to protect the engineers and cars.

The weather radar is showing a gap in the rain, meaning a restart could be in store soon.

  • Horner - red flag the "right thing"

Red Bull boss Christian Horner understands why the red flag has been shown, but he reckons the race should have started at its original time.

He tells Sky Sports: "It's the right thing to have stopped it now, I'm not quite sure why we didn't star it.

"Now it's too wet to be having a race out there."

  • Red flag out in Monaco

We have a RED FLAG in Monaco.

The drivers are back in the pits with the track absolutely sodden.

This means the start will be delayed even further.

  • Rain has returned again

To add to the drama, the rain is back.

Sebastian Vettel sums it up well on the team radio.

He says: "Heavy rain now, and a lot of water generally."

  • Formation lap now underway

They are off behind the safety car.

There is a LOT of spray behind the cars, which is sure to make visibility incredibly difficult.

We may be in for a few formation laps here before the official start.
