THE Taj Mahal is easily one of the most recognised landmarks in the world.

It attracts up to eight million visitors every year, making it India's top-grossing monument.

What is the Taj Mahal?

The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum.

Construction started in 1932 and it was completed by 1648.

But other parts including the mosque, the guest house and the main gateway on the south were also added and finished in 1653.

It was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favourite wife Mumtaz Mahal.

When Shah Jahan died in 1966 he was buried in the Taj Mahal next to his wife.

The mausoleum was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for being "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage".

The Taj Mahal is situated the Indian city of Agra.

It sits on the south bank of the Yamuna river.

  • Type "Taj Mahal" but don't hit enter.
  • Google Maps takes you instantly to familiar terms near to your location - and Taj Mahal is quite a popular name for Indian restaurants in the UK, so it may not take you to the correct place instantly.
  • Look down the list for Taj Mahal, Dharmapuri, Forest Colony, Tajganj, Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India.
  • Tap it and Google Maps will pinpoint where the Taj Mahal is.
