After more than three excruciating days of ballot-counting, Democrat Joe Biden has finally been declared president-elect. Pennsylvania put him over the 270 electoral vote threshold on Saturday morning, clinching the 2020 election for Biden and his Vice-President elect, Kamala Harris, the first Black woman to occupy the office. She was apparently out on a run when the news landed, but called her boss to let him know he’s “gonna be the next president of the United States.”
Of course, Donald Trump has spent much of the week filing flimsy lawsuits and demanding of officials to STOP THE VOTE — surprising no one, he declined to concede the race, and instead issued a statement characteristically riddled with misinformation. Legal challenges will almost certainly follow in coming weeks, but with a handful of swing states still poised to report their final tallies, the outlook is good. The wait on small ballot batches is over. And people are excited. People are relieved.
In New York City, the minutes after the networks called the race saw the streets erupt in cheers and a cacophony of honks. (Happy honks.)
