Doja Cat Says She’s Quitting Music

Last week, after a heated back-and-forth with fans who were upset about a canceled performance, Doja Cat posted a series of tweets announcing she was quitting music. “This shit ain’t for me so I’m out,” she wrote. “Y’all take care.” She also changed her Twitter display name to “i quit.”

Doja’s original announcement was posted in the comments section of a thread claiming she had somehow mistreated her fans in Paraguay after the Asunciónico music festival, where she was scheduled to perform, was canceled due to a major storm. Some claimed she was being rude by not greeting them outside her hotel after the festival was called off. Other fans pointed out that she made no mention of the cancellation on social media but did tweet about a performance in Brazil the following day, writing that she didn’t think she gave a good show but that “we got another show tomorrow” and “I promise I’ll do better.”

Doja Cat is far from the first musician to encounter the truly deranged corners of her own fandom online. Fans have been hoping that her vow to quit was an empty threat, but she doubled down on Thursday, announcing on Twitter that she’ll retire after performing as the opening act on the Weeknd’s After Hours tour. “For those who are seeing me at the after hours tour, i’m not bailing,” Doja wrote. “But me not bailing doesn’t mean my ass isn’t going to disappear right after.”

According to Doja, she plans to fulfill other musical duties in addition to the After Hours tour. “i got videos to film i got performances to do and I got content to drop so i’m pooping it out and dippin,” she wrote on Twitter. “i ain’t gone yet.” She’s also scheduled to perform at the Grammys on Sunday.
