In Photos: Pennsylvania’s Passionate Presence at the Democratic National Convention

The Democratic National Convention — held in Chicago — spanned four days, attracting thousands of delegates, prominent politicians, social media influencers, celebrities, and attendees. At night, politicians gave enthusiastic, arousing speeches, and during the day, groups mobilized for conferences, breakfasts, and speaker panels in support of the Democrats. Through a class with the Annenberg School for Communication, two photographers from The Daily Pennsylvanian were onsite, capturing this historical moment in an unprecedented election cycle.  document.location = "https://www.thedp.com/article/2024/08/dnc-photo-essay-2024"

In Photos: Vice President Kamala Harris introduces running mate Gov. Tim Walz at Phila. rally

Vice President Kamala Harris introduced Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate during an electric rally held at Temple University’s Liacouras Center on Tuesday, the first stop of a national tour to jointly campaign the newly announced ticket.  Harris’ first rally as the Democratic Party’s official presidential nominee came at the end of an intense vice presidential search and featured an all-star lineup of Pennsylvania Democrats, including Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, United States Sens. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) and Bob Casey (D-Pa.), and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro. Only two weeks removed from President Joe Biden’s unprecedented decision to depart the 2024 presidential race, the speakers presented a united, reinvigorated Democratic front. As Harris and Walz preached to the crowd about "bringing back the joy,"  The Daily Pennsylvanian’s photographers were on the ground capturing the re-energized Democratic crowd, moment by moment. document.location = "https://www.thedp.com/article/2024/08/in-photos-harris-walz-rally"

Pro-Palestinian protesters chant at alumni event at Penn Museum

Protesters have stopped in front of the Penn Museum gates, where alumni are attending the Franklin Festival as part of Alumni Weekend. “We brought you all here because this is the alumni party,” an organizer shouted. “Do you all know that Penn’s hands are red?” Protesters chanted “UPenn, Upenn you can’t hide, you get rich off genocide” as alumni filmed from the other side of the fence. A protester climbed the fence holding a Palestinian flag.

Protester arrested by police officers

At least six police officers surrounded and arrested a protester in the middle of 34th Street as protesters shouted “You don’t need six f**king pigs on one person” and “PPD, KKK, IOF, they’re all the same.” Police officers have continued to refuse to show their badge numbers despite requests from protesters.

Police remove pro-Palestinian protesters from Fisher-Bennett Hall

Police officers and protesters were crowded around the corner of 34th and Walnut Street as multiple protesters were arrested. Police asked protesters to move away from the Walnut Street corner as protesters and police were gathered in a tight circle, forcefully pushing each other as police attempted to make arrests. Some protesters attempted to run towards Walnut St., and many officers held tasers. Protesters chanted “PPD, KKK, IOF, they’re all the same” and “Let them free” as people were handcuffed and led into Penn Police vans.
