Actor to take on role which propelled Barbra Streisand to stardom in production at Menier Chocolate Factory, which opens in December

Actor Sheridan Smith is to play Fanny Brice in a new revival of Funny Girl.

The Broadway hit, which propelled Barbra Streisand to stardom, returns to the London stage for the first time since 1966, at the Menier Chocolate Factory.

The musical tells how Brice rises from the Lower East Side of New York to become a star under producer Florenz Ziegfeld. But while she was cheered onstage as a great comedian, she had a more troubled private life.

The musical features songs including People, Don’t Rain on My Parade and I’m the Greatest Star. Streisand reprised the role for a 1968 film, her debut, which won her the Oscar for best actress, which she shared that year with Katharine Hepburn for The Lion in Winter.

The multi award-winning Michael Mayer directs the production, which opens on 2 December, with previews from 20 November, and runs until 5 March.
