Billie Eilish and Eugene Lee Yang hit the Oscars red carpet on Sunday with a crimson accessory to match. Both LGBTQ+ artists wore Artists for Ceasefire pins on their lapels.
The “What Was I Made For?” singer, who is nominated for best original song, arrived at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles in a sleek black-and-white Chanel schoolgirl look. The monochrome ensemble made the red Artists for Ceasefire pin that she sported on her lapel stand out even more. The pin features a design with a small black heart in the center, surrounded by the outline of a hand.
According to a press release from Artists4Ceasefire, the pin “symbolizes collective support for an immediate and permanent cease-fire, the release of all of the hostages and for the urgent delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.”
The Artists4Ceasefire campaign launched in October with an open letter to President Joe Biden demanding that he and Congress call for “an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel before another life is lost.” Hundreds of actors, musicians and other cultural workers have signed onto the letter, including Frank Ocean, Hari Nef, MUNA, and more. Boygenius sported the pins at the Grammys in February, and they’ve also been worn by actors such as Mark Ruffalo, Tony Shalhoub, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, according to the New York Times.
At Sunday evening’s ceremony, Eilish’s brother FINNEAS also sported an Artists for Ceasefire pin, as well as Poor Things star Ramy Youssef, who was one of the first in the night to wear it, per Buzzfeed. Others wearing the pin include documentary filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania and producer Nadim Cheikhrouha.
