Hundreds of universities advertise their rooms when students go home for the holidays.

This allows travellers to stay in them as a makeshift hotel room.

University Rooms specialises in offering dorms to travellers across the UK.

The lesser-known hack is perfect for holiday-goers who aren't looking to spend a lot of cash on their residence.

The site combines more than 100 universities, colleges and student residences in over 30 UK cities.

Over the holidays, guests can stay in either self-catered or catered accommodations for as little as £42 a night.

University Rooms added: "Whether you are aged 18 or 80, you'll find this a surprisingly convenient and affordable accommodation option."

One guest who stayed in a room at the Oxford University campus wrote: "The room was comfortable, towels, hairdryer, iron and ironing board were provided.

"10-minute walk to the city centre.

"Loved it."

The clever hotel trick that lets you 'hack' the thermostat when your room is too cold

It comes after a travel writer revealed the booking tip she always uses to save money on hotels.

Siobhan Downes is a travel expert who has spent nearly a decade testing out various travel hacks, so it's safe to say she knows exactly what she's talking about.

She recommends booking hotel rooms directly after claiming it has saved her hundreds.

She wrote: "You can almost always get a better deal by booking your accommodation direct, rather than using a third-party site like Booking.com or Agoda.

"I once saved $200 (£96) doing this – it turned out the hotel had a special rate for guests who booked direct."

The travel expert also explained that overnight stays in hotel rooms were often cheaper on a Sunday evening.

This is because demand is at its lowest.

Jetsetter who want a weekend away, Sunday may be the way to go, according to Siobhan.

Booking last minute is also a good way to save some pennies because hotels will want to fill their rooms - even if it's for a lower price.
