Who is Andy McNab and what's his background?

Andy McNab is the pseudonym of English novelist and former Special Air Service sergeant Steven Billy Mitchell.

He was born on December 28, 1959, and was found abandoned on the steps of Guy's Hospital, London, in a Harrods shopping bag.

Steven was adopted and raised by his parents in Peckham where he attended school.

He didn't get on well in school and dropped out, getting involved in petty crime eventually being arrested for burglary in 1976.

Steven decided to enrol in the army and, after failing the entry test to be a pilot, joined the Royal Green Jackets aged 16.

In 1984 he transferred to the SAS and served on a number of covert and overt missions.

During the Gulf War he was captured while trying to escape Iraq on foot.

He was released after six weeks with severe injuries including nerve damage to both hands, a dislocated shoulder, kidney and liver damage, and hepatitis B.

After six months in recovery, he was back in active duty.

He left the army in 1993 and took on the pen name Andy McNab in order to write the autobiographical story of his time in the military.

When he appears in the media, he obscures his face in order to protect his identity.

What's Andy McNab's Bob Curry petition?

Bob Curry served in the Special Air Service for 16 years and took part in the Iranian Embassy Siege in 1980.

The 64-year-old SAS hero was left homeless after Herefordshire Council was unable to provide him with a home.

The soldier was sleeping on his daughter’s sofa and had been forced to sell his medals in order to make ends meet.

Andy McNab launched a petition to give the proud SAS hero a home.

It received in excess of 400,000 signatures and was ultimately successful after Herefordshire Council offered him a bungalow which he accepted.

Speaking after getting his new home, SAS hero Bob said: "I can’t thank Sun readers enough for helping me get it."
