Aside from serving as a senior Florida senator, Marco Rubio has amassed a significant net worth throughout his career in politics, law, and education.

Who is Marco Rubio?

Rubio was born in Miami to Mario Rubio Reina, a bartender, and Oriales Rubio, a hotel maid.

He has three siblings, Mario, Barbara, and Veronica.

Both of his parents applied for US citizenship and were naturalized in 1975.

Some of Rubio's other relatives were admitted to the United States as refugees.

Rubio has said that growing up his family had "little money to manage."

He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Florida in 1993 and attended the University of Miami School of Law in 1996.

While studying law, Rubio interned for US Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and worked on Republican senator Bob Dole's 1996 presidential campaign.

In April 1998, Rubio was elected to a seat as city commissioner for West Miami, beginning his political career.

After working as a city commissioner for West Miami in the 90s, he was elected to the 111th district in the Florida House of Representatives in 2000.

He was eventually elected as speaker of the House in November 2006 and was Speaker for two years.

After leaving the Florida legislature in 2008 due to term limits, Rubio taught at Florida International University before running for Senate.

His influence on Latin American policy has led him to be described as a "virtual secretary of state for Latin America."

Rubio is an average Republican member of Congress, meaning he will vote with the Republican Party on the majority of bills.

Rubio, a Republican, was first elected to the US Senate in 2010.

In April 2015, he announced he would be campaigning for president in the 2016 election but dropped out after coming in second to Donald Trump in his home state.

What is Marco Rubio's net worth?

In 2018, Open Secrets placed Rubio's net worth in the negatives, claiming his estimated net worth was -$1,262,995 in the red.

It appears that the Florida senator has since bounced back, and paid off a significant amount of his debts.

As of July 2024, Marco Rubio has an estimated net worth of over $400,000, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Other sources, like Constitution US, claim his net worth is significantly higher, ranging from $1 to $2.5 million.

This is based largely on his senatorial salary, book deals, and other sources of income, along with assets including primary and rental properties, investment accounts, and savings.

When running for the Oval Office in 2016, Rubio was the least affluent of all the GOP candidates.

He was the only one who wasn't a millionaire or billionaire and used that to relate to his constituents.

Rubio didn't pay off the last $100,000 of his student debt until he signed a book deal for $800,000 to publish his 2012 memoir, An American Son, telling his story of growing up the son of two Cuban immigrants.

However, at the same time, he also spent his money on extravagant purchases, including a 24-foot speed boat that cost the same as his book earnings.

Rubio's money management skills were enough of a concern to be flagged by Mitt Romney's campaign when he was being vetted as a potential running mate.

Rubio has owned up to his mistakes: using personal credit cards to pay for his campaigns, appointing his wife, Jeanette, as a treasurer of a political action committee, and using the party money to attend a family reunion.

He has said that due to his parent's immigrant status and limited funds growing up, he didn't learn money management skills and has had to learn through trial and error.

Rubio was reportedly on the shortlist to be former President Donald Trump's vice presidential pick.

However, on July 15, 2024, Trump ultimately selected JD Vance as his running mate.

Is Marco Rubio married?

Marco Rubio is married to Jeanette Dousdebes Rubio.

The duo first met at a neighborhood party while Jeanette was in high school and Rubio was in college.

They reconnected while Jeanette was a member of the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders in 1997, and their relationship escalated quickly.

In 1998, the couple officially tied the knot during a Catholic ceremony at the Church of the Little Flower in Coral Gables, Florida.

The Rubios have welcomed four children over the years, including daughters Amanda and Daniella, and sons Dominick and Anthony.

The couple and their children, when not in college, reside in West Miami, Florida.

Their marital home is located near Jeanette's three sisters, who help out with the family when Rubio is in Washington D.C., or Tallahassee.

In a 2016 interview with Parade, Rubio and Jeanette opened up about their marriage and family life.

"You have to work at it," Rubio said, in response to what makes the couple's relationship "work."

"I think there’s this notion that love is a feeling. Love isn’t just a feeling – love actually is an action," he said.

"I mean, it requires you to act on it," he added.

"Yeah, commitment. It’s a commitment," Jeanette added.
