Rugby League icon Kevin Sinfield raises £1.7MILLION for Rob Burrow and MND research after SEVEN marathons in seven days

KEVIN SINFIELD gorged on bacon and egg sarnies and mince pies to raise a stunning £1.7million for Rob Burrow.

The Leeds Rhinos legend, 40, ran SEVEN marathons in seven days to raise money for his former team-mate and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

With an original target of £77,777 — a nod to Burrow’s No 7 shirt number —  Sinfield was stunned to  hit seven figures by the time he finished yesterday.

The Leeds director of rugby admitted it made getting up in the early hours to run in snow, sleet, wind and darkness worthwhile.

Talking about how he recovered between marathons, Sinfield said: “First thing was get shaking, then getting a bacon and egg butty and a coffee to warm up.

“It’s about getting as many calories in the first 30 minutes. After that it’s a couple of mince pies or cookies.

“When I get back, it’s an ice bath and Tubigrips on my feet, calves and shins. Then it went up my legs to my knees. I was going to end up like a mummy if I’d carried on.

“Then later in the afternoon get on the bike then back in the ice bath. Get in bed at 9pm-ish and toss and turn for seven hours before getting up again.”

Sinfield, who completed each of the marathons in less than four hours, knows how cruel motor neurone disease is and had daily Zoom calls with sufferers.

His achievements have sparked calls to make the ‘Sir’ nickname he has at Leeds real with a knighthood.

But Sinfield added: “It’s not about that for me — this was about Rob.

“Rob’s been overwhelmed by it. I get texts every night from him.

“And to be able to tell him what we’ve achieved, what we talked about on dark days in December, gives us as friends great satisfaction.

“Sometimes you just need to help a mate, that’s all we can do.”
