FAN-FAVOURITE weather presenter Carol Kirkwood has opened up about the chance encounter she had in 2017, which led her to meeting her now-husband Steve Randall and the reason she almost skipped out on their first meeting.

Carol, 62, tied the knot with her long-time beau Steve, who is 14 years her junior

In an interview for The Mail’s You Magazine, Carol detailed how she and Steve met at a work function almost seven years ago.

However, they met completely by chance, as neither of them planned to attend, only to both change their minds at the last minute.

Carol described that choice as a “sliding doors moment” and has never looked back. After their first meeting, Carol and Steven enjoyed a lunch date together.

Revealing more details, she said: “I met Steve at a work function about seven years ago. I was drinking an espresso martini, and Steve very sensibly wasn’t drinking because he’s a policeman and had work the next day.

“We went on our first lunch date shortly after and had sandwiches and tea. It’s strange to think that neither of us had planned on going to the function, but we changed our minds at the last minute, and if one of us hadn’t, we’d never have met. It was a real sliding doors moment.”

Their romance continued to blossom over the years and in 2022, Carol announced her engagement to Steve on the BBC while she was presenting live from the Chelsea Flower Show

Carol and Steve then tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at Cliveden House in Buckinghamshire on December 27 last year.

Speaking about the special day to the BBC, Carol gushed: “I cannot tell you how fabulous it’s been. You shouldn’t really be talking like this about your own wedding, but it was blissful. It was romantic. It was absolutely perfect. And I would not change a thing about the day.”

Now Carol and Steve are enjoying married life at the countryside home they share together.

BBC Breakfast slammed for ‘pointless’ format shakeup as Jon Kay fronts show SOLO in the studio and Carol Kirkwood is replaced

Appearing on BBC Breakfast means Carol’s morning routine is a little unusual, but Steve appears to have synced his schedule to hers as the presenter revealed Steve makes her a cup of tea every morning at 2.45am so she can start her day right.

She added: “I call mine ‘baby tea’ because I have it so weak with loads of milk. My favourite is Tetley, but if you make me a cup of any brand, I’m grateful.”

Carol has been taking a break from the BBC studio this week with meteorologist Matt Taylor taking over presenting duties yesterday (July 15).

Explaining Carol’s absence, Matt tweeted: “Good morning. We’ve sent Carol Kirkwood off to see if she can persuade summer to pay us a longer visit.”

Making a joke about the gloomy weather they’ve both been reporting on recently, he added: “In the meantime, I’m looking after the @BBCBreakfast forecast this week and …oh look …more rain.”

Matt did not confirm when Carol would be returning to BBC Breakfast, but the fan-favourite presenter was absent again this morning (July 16), with Kate Kinsella taking her place.
