Macy Gray, whose real name is Natalie Renée McIntyre, is best known for her international hit single “I Try”.

Also co-written by Macy, the song debuted as the second single in her 1999 debut album On How Life Is.

The acclaimed performer, 56,  has signed up to star in a reality television show for MTV.

Titled The Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets, the format sees eight famous faces sharing one villa in an “outlandish getaway”.

Joining Macy in the cast will be former Fifth Harmony member Ally Brooke, actor/musician Chet Hanks (who’s Tom Hanks’ son) and model Josie Canseco.

Rapper O.T. Genasis, actor Tyler Posey and Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir have also signed up.

Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets will premiere in the US on July 23.

As it happens, the upcoming show is far from Macy's first foray into the world of TV.

She starred in season nine of ABC's Dancing with The Stars, but was the second celebrity to be eliminated.

More recently, Macy appeared on both the Australian and US versions of musical guessing game The Masked Singer.

On the Australian show, the singer portrayed "Atlantis" but was the sixth artist to be voted out of the show.

She fared much better on the American version as "Sea Queen", finishing in fourth place overall.

Earlier this year, UK viewers were insistent she'd completed a trifecta by starring in ITV's iteration of the beloved format.

Fans believed Macy to be the singer behind "Eiffel Tower", who proved to be one of the frontrunners.

Other guesses included Ted Lasso's Hannah Waddingham and 'Allo 'Allo! actress Vicki Michelle.

None of these proved correct, however, as singer Tiffany, known for covering "I Think We're Alone Now", was unveiled as the mystery vocalist.

Meanwhile, Macy has also expanded into films, including appearances as herself or as a minor character.

Her film credits include the likes of Spider-Man, Training Day, Scary Movie 3 and Around the World in 80 Days.
