Why is 'Murder on the Dancefloor' trending?

Released in 2001, Sophie Ellis-Bextor's single Murder on the Dancefloor is enjoying a rebirth.

The reason why the iconic anthem is trending now is because of the controversial film Saltburn.

I think there are definitely scenes in Saltburn which probably could never have been in the original script or we would never have got it made.

The song has gone viral thanks to its inclusion in the film's final scene in which its star, Oscar-nominee Barry Keoghan, dances nude to it.

Thanks to this, the popular tune has gone back into the Top Ten for the first time in over 20 years.

Singer Sophie has also seen a renaissance in her career both here and abroad.

She even landed an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon in the US in February 2024.

Who is Sophie Ellis-Bextor?

Sophie Ellis-Bextor is a British singer from Hounslow, London.

She was born on April 10, 1979, to former Blue Peter presenter Janet Ellis and TV director dad Robin Bextor.

Sophie first found fame in the late 1990s as the lead singer of Indie rock band Theaudience.

After the band split she went on to pursue a successful solo career in the noughties which saw her release Murder on the Dancefloor.

Her other big hits are Take me home (2002), and Mixed Up World (2003)

Who is the cast of Saltburn and what is it about?

Taking the lead in this outrageous film is Marvel star Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi who play Oliver Quick and Felix Catton.

Saltburn follows the pair who met whilst studying at Oxford University.

After forming an unlikely friendship they then spend the summer together at Felix's family estate, Saltburn.

It's here that things begin to take a turn for the worse and a series of unfortunate (and disgusting) events take place.

The cast also sees lots of A-List stars popping up which includes Rosamund Pike, Richard E. Grant, and Carey Mulligan.

Thanks to one rather revolting scene involving a bathtub, the film has caused quite a star amongst film fans.

While some viewers found the movie quite disturbing, others have praised it for pushing the limits

Speaking about Saltburn's risqué plot, actress Rosamund said: "The script I read is still not quite the film that’s on screen, because Emerald Fennell [director] is someone who keeps writing.

“She keeps pushing those things a bit further.
