Boys bedroom ideas that will adapt to any age and still look great! See the first room makeover from the Lavender Blue Cottage!

A boy's bedroom with a bed, side table and lamp

Ever since we moved from our pole barn home into the Lavender Blue Cottage, I’ve been itching to do a room makeover. Transforming a space into something you love is so fun and satisfying!

I also knew that this particular room was going to be special because it was the first room that my little boy has had all too himself. No more sharing a room with a sister and trying to keep things gender neutral. (It was actually a really cute and fun room – I still love the wallpaper we used!)

Because the whole world was open to us, I wanted to go full boy – in a timeless and classic way. This space needed boys bedroom ideas that could look great for my little guy now while also transitioning with him into the teen years. I wanted his interests and personality to be expressed in this room.

This room has been a delight to design and decorate. If you’re getting ready for a similar project, here are my best ideas for creating a boy’s bedroom that will grow with them through the years.

Colors and Wood Tones

First, I like to begin a room design by looking at colors, color shades, and finishes. For me, this means deciding how I want a room to feel – bright and airy? soft and feminine? cozy and earthy?

Along with colors, I also think of what wood tones would go best with the feeling I am trying to create. It’s been my experience that cool or gray undertones, whether light or dark, usually read more neutral and are easier to adapt than warmer tones.

In this boy’s bedroom, I used colors that he loves (blue and green) for the bedding and furniture.

Along with choosing the colors and tones, I also decided to lean into plaid patterns due to my little guy’s preferences. You can see that we hung green plaid curtains on the curtain rods and mixed different plaid patterns into the rug, blankets and throw pillows.

I was unsure how this plaid mixing would turn out, but I love it! It has an ageless feel to me.

If you want something like blue walls or stripes – go for it! Keeping in mind the feeling you want to set in your room can guide how you incorporate those great ideas.

Boys’ Bedroom Furniture Ideas

Next up, I took a good look at the bedroom furniture.

A small room, like a bedroom, can be tricky. You have to limit yourself to the most important furniture items. For you this might mean book shelves, a toy chest or a dresser.

In this room, it was decided that adding a desk on the side of the room was important for my little guy. He likes to do his schoolwork (and play and daydream) in this area.

Desks are a great way to promote learning and creativity at any age. It’s something that will remain useful for many years, not just during childhood.

The desk was unfinished and I used the color Green Tea Leaf by Benjamin Moore to paint it.

I opted for neutral-colored side tables with drawer storage for this room.

If given a chance, I always go for furniture with more storage. The extra storage space can accommodate their growing needs.

Bed and Mattress

We took the beautiful turned wood bed that our son used in our last house and set it up in this bedroom. The wood tone of the bed worked very well with this bedroom’s existing wall treatment.

To top it off, we got an amazing mattress from Birch Living. My son says it feels like a cloud! You can learn more details about the mattress in my YouTube video.

A good mattress, and good furniture in general, is worth the investment since it will stand the test of time as your child grows.

For the bedding, I like to use items that are multi-purpose. For example, with this bed I can add extra layers of blankets or pillows in the winter and subtract them down to very light items for summer. Not only can I adapt to the seasons, but also adjust styles/colors by switching out things like throw pillows and throw blankets when tastes change.

Storage and Organization

Storage and organization can be a real challenge in a child’s room. In fact, it can get down right scary sometimes. I’m sure we’ve all had the misfortune of stepping on a stray Lego piece. Oh, the pain!

To help keep toys and clutter under control, we used plastic bins that slide under the bed. Cubbies or baskets in the closet would work too. Out of sight and out of stepping range – hopefully! 😉

Boys’ Bedroom Decor Ideas

When it comes to a room’s decor, I love to get my child’s input.

My little guy loved the picture below of boys playing in the water, so we included it in this bedroom makeover.

It great to incorporate kids’ room ideas that are flexible. Interests change quickly as kids grow. One minute they love dinosaurs and the next it’s basketball.

Because of this, I try to decorate for style, rather than a specific theme. I went with a cottage/farmhouse style for this room, but rustic or industrial-style would be fun too. Let that personality shine!

In this room, we used meaningful decor, like this basket of old baseballs and bowling pins that my son has been collecting for years.

Vintage books and model cars are another favorite of his. We always look for them together when we’re antiquing and it’s created a lot of fond memories for us.

Heirlooms and vintage aren’t just emotionally significant, they can also give a room a timeless feel.

Oh, how I love this room and the little boy that lives here!
