Kevin Costner's "Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” is heading to Max.
The sweeping Western, which Costner, 69, co-wrote, directed, produced and stars in, debuts exclusively on Max on Friday, Aug. 23.
The recent announcement of a release date for Max followed a disappointing box office performance for "Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1" after it opened June 28. "Chapter 2" had been set to hit theaters Aug. 16 but it was removed from the schedule weeks earlier. (It is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September.)
"Horizon: An American Saga" explores the lives of the settlers who fought to make the American Old West their home. "Chapter 1" is the first installment in a planned four-part series.
“The frontier wasn’t a land in Disneyland. It was real,” Costner told TODAY.com in June.
“Our ancestors went through it and it was a 200-year march. It wasn’t, ‘Oh, they’re there and now things were rosy.’ They got there and look what happened to them. There was a way this country was built, there was a way a whole group of people were displaced, there was drama,” he added.
Costner, who told TODAY.com he spent 35 years trying to get "Horizon" on the silver screen, said he is proud to have made a “really good Western.”
