Know Before You Go

Expect dry, hot weather

Yes, Phoenix gets hot — but (as they say), it’s a dry heat. In the summer, expect average low daily temperatures well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Definitely reapply ample SPF and stay hydrated.

The winter weather is much milder: Phoenix stays mostly sunny with high temperatures in the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit — and those pleasant temperatures can make it an ideal time to visit, with an umbrella (usually) not required.

Consider renting a car

The Phoenix area encompasses about 500 square miles – it’s sprawling, with diverse points of interest all throughout the valley. If you plan to explore, you will most likely want to rent a car. It’s the best way to get around in a region where many popular destinations can easily be 30 minutes apart from each other or more. (Rideshare is also a feasible option, though prices add up over these longer distances.)

Visit in the low season to save money

While summer is peak season in some parts of the world, it’s considered low season in the Phoenix area due to the extreme heat. That makes it a great time to visit if you’re seeking the best rates on hotel rooms and other tourist-friendly services. Manage the heat by venturing outside in the mornings and evenings — and definitely take advantage of the hotel pool.

How We Chose These Hotels

To choose the best hotels in Phoenix for this list, we first narrowed down the terrain, focusing on the city proper (and isolating Scottsdale hotels in a separate guide). The author of this article, Alesandra Dubin, contributed her expertise in the selection. She has personally visited many properties in the area, and for this article, she also consulted colleagues who are both locals and fellow frequent travelers, and pored over hundreds of reviews. She focused on the quality of the guest experience, design elements, amenities, location, value, and service. In her 20 years of experience as a travel writer, Dubin has reviewed hundreds of hotels around the world. And finally, as with all our hotel coverage, editors ensure all hotel recommendations we make align with our core T+L Hotel Values.
