Dagne Dover’s Luggage Edit has officially landed and we’re rolling out the jet bridge to share all the information on the newness. Unveiling the brand’s first-ever wheeled suitcases, garment bags, and packing cubes, Travel + Leisure editors tested the collection in our New York City lab before the official launch on June 21.

We dropped everything to get a sneak peek and try these pieces out on the airplane and hotel room sets we created in our lab. I also got the opportunity to chat with the co-founders of the brand to learn even more about the softside luggage and travel accessories in this collection. Here’s everything you need to know.

At a Glance

  • The Luggage Edit includes four softside suitcases, two garment bags, and four packing cubes.
  • Suitcase sizes range from 20.5 inches (for a small carry-on) up to 28.5 inches (for the large checked).
  • All of the bags are made with recycled 900D polyester and Repreve fabric and they come in black, green, pink, and gray shades.
  • The packing cubes are made with a recycled performance air mesh material and come in black, green, pink, and yellow shades.
  • Each item is thoughtfully named after the destination it could be used for — like the Sydney checked bag for long trips or the Capri garment bag for destination weddings.

“Design-wise, our objective was to give people and our community something really flexible and really high-quality that's really intuitive to use and allows you to travel smoothly and customize the way that you travel whether it's for leisure or fun.” - Jessy Dover, Dagne Dover co-founder and CCO.

The Collection

Best for: Two-week-long trips, international trips, families

The largest bag of the new collection, the Sydney checked suitcase is designed for trips of two weeks or more, or families packing together. The two clamshell compartments in this spacious bag make organizing a breeze. And if you need a little more space, there are adjustable zippers to add an extra 2.25 inches in depth.

Another standout feature we noticed was the U-shape front zipper that allows travelers to grab an item quickly without having to unzip the entire suitcase. Plus, despite its large stature, we found that it was smooth to roll around thanks to the 360-degree spinner wheels and sturdy adjustable handle, even when we packed it full.

Best For: Multi-leg trips, 10-day trips

With all the same features as its larger counterpart above, this 25-inch Sydney checked bag is the perfect medium-sized suitcase. While we love the spacious interior of the larger version, this slightly smaller checked bag could be better for trips with multiple destinations since it’s easier to maneuver and store in a hotel thanks to the smaller stature. With 66 liters of storage space, this bag also has adjustable zippers for an additional 2.25 inches while still being within the typical checked bag size restriction of 62 linear inches. Similar to the larger version (and the carry-ons below), the 360-degree spinner wheels rolled smoothly, and the retractable and adjustable handle felt perfectly sturdy.

The Details: 25 x 17.5 x 11 inches | 11.14 pounds | 66 liters | Expandable

Best For: Domestic flights, weeklong trips

No matter where your travels take you, the 23.5-inch Seattle Carry-on is up for the adventure. The largest of the two new carry-on bags, this one boasts a generous 41-liter capacity which we found easily fit enough clothes for a weeklong trip. It has two spacious clamshell compartments for packing various items while still fitting into our overhead bin. The U-shape front zipper also makes it possible to pack the bag from the front as one large compartment — the divider can be removed — which is a unique and welcomed feature for various packing preferences.

Other notable features we were drawn to include the 16-inch laptop pocket, the spacious front zippered compartment, and the ultra-padded handles that made it easy to hoist the bag on and off our hotel room bed and into the overhead as well.

The Details: 23.5 x 13.5 x 8.75 inches | 10 pounds | 41 liters | 16-inch laptop sleeve

Best For: Short trips, airlines with strict size requirements

It’s no secret that airlines are cracking down on luggage size restrictions, so we love that Dagne Dover created a 20.5-inch carry-on to avoid pesky luggage fees. Don’t be fooled by the smaller size; this bag can still fit plenty of items for a vacation thanks to the natural give of the softside material. There aren’t expandable zippers, but there are plenty of internal and external pockets for accessories, undergarments, or a laptop up to 13 inches wide. The suitcase also features the U-shape zipper in the front to open up and top-load the suitcase with clothes, shoes, and more. Since this bag is designed for traveling in-cabin, the smaller size and cushioned handles made it easy to lift into an overhead compartment and it would be our choice for smaller regional aircraft.

The Details: 20.5 x 13 x 8.75 inches | 9.2 pounds | 33 liters | 13-inch laptop sleeve

Best For: Business travelers, multiple dresses or suits

This particular piece of luggage from the new collection is a game-changer for traveling with dressier clothing thanks to the nifty duffel-meets-garment bag design. It unfolds like a typical garment bag to pack and store multiple suits or longer dresses, but it also has spots to place other items you need to bring while traveling like regular clothing, shoes, a toiletry bag, and a laptop. The numerous pockets make it easy to organize clothes and accessories, and we love that there is a padded laptop pocket — a feature we often don’t see in garment bags.

“It took a long time to get it right,” co-founder and COO Deepa Gandhi said while discussing the design elements of the new garment duffel bag that she and her husband tested themselves before it hit the market. “But with the combination of the right zippers and curves and magnets, you can zip it up now with one hand, which is huge.”

Additionally, the top handles, detachable shoulder strap, and luggage sleeve means that the bag can be carried in multiple different ways depending on your preferences. Made with the same 900D poly fabric as the suitcases, you can travel stress-free knowing that your items are protected by durable and weather-resistant material.

The Details: 21 x 13 x 10 inches | 4.2 pounds | 46 liters

Best For: Wedding guests, light packers

The Capri Garment Bag has a simple, yet effective design that makes it ideal for guests traveling to a destination wedding. “It's so frustrating when you use a garment bag, but it's a half or a trifold. Then when you get to your destination, you still have to steam everything out. We made [this one] long enough so it keeps the shape, and it's a quad-fold as a result,” Gandhi said.

This garment bag has more than enough room to keep several floor-length dresses or suits wrinkle-free en route to your destination. And with various pockets for accessories and shoes, you can store all of your dressier items in one place. Similar to the Monaco garment bag above, it has a hook to hang the bag in a closet and it’s made with the same ultradurable 900D polyester. We also loved the exterior pockets that are perfectly sized for a phone, travel documents, and other easy-access essentials.

The Details: 67 x 22.5 x 1 inches | 3.2 pounds | 25 liters

Best For: Anyone who likes to stay organized

These mesh packing cubes were a huge hit among T+L editors during our sneak peek of the new collection. The color options are bright and bold, and we loved the four size options for stashing everything from bulky pants to undergarments that can be lost in a suitcase easily. Whether packing the checked or carry-ons suitcases, the square and rectangular shapes fit perfectly together like winning a game of Tetris on the first try. When it comes to accessories, Dagne Dover just knows what they’re doing, so we’re not surprised at how functional and durable they feel. Because they are sold separately, we also like the ability to mix and match our sizes and colors to suit our own personal tastes.

The Details: 16.5 x 13.4 x 5.5 inches (extra-large), 13.2 x 11.4 x 4.5 inches (large), 13 x 7.9 x 3.7 inches (medium), 5.9 x 5.9 x 3.5 inches (small) | 19 liters (extra-large), 11 liters (large), 6 liters (medium), 2 liters (small)

Side Note

The new Travel 2.0 collection will also include the Lima Luggage Tag and the Lyon Luggage Lock, both coming soon. The lock is compatible with all of the new suitcases, as well as the Monaco Garment Bag and Lagos medium and large duffel bags from the previous Travel 1.0 (the Carry-on Edit) collection.

Noteworthy Features

One of the first questions I asked the co-founders of Dagne Dover was why they chose softsided luggage. It's quite the debate here at T+L and beyond, so I was particularly interested to know.

“Soft luggage is just more durable, but also there wasn't really an option that felt really sleek and cool to me that I wanted to carry, to be honest. We took those things that feel aesthetically pleasing to us about hard case luggage and just infused them in the design of the soft luggage,” Dover explains.

For the wheeled luggage, there were several design features that we found particularly unique during our sneak peek. Depending on the way you like to pack suitcases, the suitcase interior can be accessed and packed from the front U-shaped zippers or it can be unzipped from the middle to pack the two compartments clamshell style. This offers variety for travelers to add and remove items in a way that works best for them — no one is bound by a specific way of packing.

Every piece of luggage in the collection had an abundance of pockets to pack intuitively. It’s rare to find luggage that offers a specific laptop sleeve or pocket, so it was a welcome surprise to see that every bag but the Capri garment bag had a spot to place at least one 13-inch laptop or larger.

We also loved the little details like cushioned handles for added comfort. “When you grab the handle or when you're trying to put it up, it feels really good in your hand,” co-founder and CEO Melissa Shin Mash says. “It's really ergonomic versus a flat handle, which just doesn't roll in your hand then. This is a really nice comfort and it’s going to make you have a better grip as well. That's one of the elements that we've really enjoyed out of the product.”

Lastly, the construction and materials look and feel extremely durable. The recycled 900D polyester feels like it could endure the roughest handling and bounce back looking as good as new. The adjustable handles and 360-degree spinner wheels on the suitcases felt sturdy and the corners have bumpers to absorb the shock impact.

Our Conclusion

We’ve tested Dagne Dover fanny packs, backpacks, duffels, accessories, and now after seeing the rolling luggage and garment bags, the new collection completes the brand as a one-stop shop for traveling in style. Although the 900D polyester material differs in look from the typical neoprene-style fabric the brand is known for, it’s clear that the thoughtful designs and colors complement one another in a way that allows current customers to seamlessly integrate the rolling luggage into their collection.

Our team has tried hundreds of pieces of luggage and it’s always been a challenge to find softside luggage that is as stylish as it is functional. Dagne Dover has always been an industry-leader for having a slew of thoughtfully designed bags that are aesthetically pleasing, so we’re not surprised to see their new collection match that expectation.

The bags are sleek, protective, easy to roll and pack, and are made with environmentally-friendly materials — what’s not to love? As we continue to test the luggage, we’ll be updating our articles with in-depth insights to see how the bags hold up over time, so stay tuned.
