Nothing says, “I’m ready to relax,” quite like a comfortable bathrobe. Whether you like yours to be like a giant fluffy towel that you can wear right after a shower or bath or you prefer to be draped in the fabric equivalent of a warm hug while lounging, there’s a robe out there for you.

Searching for the best luxury bathrobes might not be the most onerous task on your list, but we’ve made it even easier for you. Over a two-week testing period at home, we tried out 38 bathrobes ranging from silky kimonos to sumptuous spa robes. We made our selections based on quality, comfort, design, and fit. Keep reading to learn about all of the robes that will now make it supremely difficult to ever leave the house again — unless you decide to pack one for a relaxing spa retreat or beachside getaway, of course.

Why We Love It
  • This soft, superabsorbent robe is perfect for wearing after a shower or bath.

What to Consider
  • This robe is quite warm, so it’s better for colder months.

Picture the warmest, most glorious blanket you’ve ever cuddled up in. Now, picture that same blanket with sleeves and a self-tie belt. That’s the experience we had each time we wore this shawl collar robe from Kashwére. We had been enjoying a high-end designer robe prior to testing, but we’ve moved on now that we know this supremely comfortable robe exists.

It’s pure heaven wearing this robe, right down to the logo that’s imprinted right on the robe to save us from the annoyance of a tag. We especially loved putting this superabsorbent robe on after a shower — any spot we missed toweling off was soon dry. During the two weeks of testing, we didn’t spot a wrinkle or a bit of lint on this robe, and there’s no hint of stretching or pilling, either. We even washed out a small stain by hand without a problem.

We liked that the robe felt stretchy and comfortable, and it stayed securely tied until we loosened the belt. It’s also incredibly warm, so it’s a better choice for cooler weather. Did we mention it has pockets? We could go on and on, but we’ll finish up by saying that even if you’ve never been a “robe person” before, this one from Kashwére will convert you.

Four Seasons Spa Robe

Why We Love It
  • The cotton terry stays sumptuously soft wash after wash.

What to Consider
  • It’s not very absorbent if you’re wearing this straight after bathing.

Some might only wear a bathrobe occasionally, but this spa robe from the Four Seasons became part of our go-to at-home wardrobe during testing. It was so comfortable, we wore it every chance we could get. Without exaggeration, wearing this terry robe felt like we were being hugged by a cloud. The cotton is luxuriously soft and refuses to wrinkle — we even washed it quite a few times and it still looks brand-new. It’s roomy and comfortable, and we love that the pockets are also spacious enough for a phone or even a snack (no judging).

This robe is incredibly warm, so it’s probably better to reserve it for getting cozy in the winter. If we had to pick a single (small) flaw, it’s that it isn’t that absorbent if you’re wearing it straight out of the shower. But we’ll gladly take another minute to towel off fully before slipping into this incredibly comfortable spa robe that makes us feel like we have indeed checked into for a weekend at the Four Seasons.

The Mark Bathrobes

Why We Love It
  • It’s perfect for wearing right after a bath or shower as well as for lounging around.

What to Consider
  • The sleeves are a bit short, and the robe shrunk a bit after washing.

This 100 percent cotton robe feels supersoft on the outside. On the inside it feels like a towel, and it’s absorbent enough to wear out of the shower. We did notice that the robe shrunk a tiny bit after washing, but the quality of the material held up with no wrinkles, discoloration, or other signs of wear. There are two belt tie loops — one on the inside and the exterior belt — and we much preferred the latter for a more comfortable fit. The robe also features upper and lower loops so you can customize the height of your belt. We liked the roomy fit that provides comfortable warmth without overheating, so it’s a good contender for a year-round robe. There are two spacious pockets on the front that are deep enough to hold a phone or, more importantly, keep your hands warm on chilly days. The sleeves were a bit short, but the fit was otherwise comfortable being that this is a one-size-fits-all design.

Why We Love It
  • Like Ugg boots, this robe offers soft, cozy comfort.

What to Consider
  • It’s not absorbent enough to wear right after a shower.

If you’ve ever slipped into a pair of Ugg boots and wondered, “Why can’t the rest of my body experience this softness?” you’re in luck. The Marlow robe offers the plush warmth you expect from an Ugg product and will be your go-to for lounging this winter. We were impressed with the robe’s high-quality construction, and we noticed that it stayed wrinkle-free and looked good as new even after a wash.

This robe is roomy, but it does run true to size. We found the sleeves fit well without being too long, and the self-tie robe stayed snug. We felt warm without being overheated, though we’d probably reserve this for the cooler months. It’s not absorbent for wearing straight out of the shower and would likely be too warm to wear if you’re drying your hair, but if you want a soft, sumptuous robe for lounging, this robe is a great choice.

The Details: XXS-3XL | 100 percent polyester | Machine washable

Why We Love It
  • It’s warm and comfortable for lounging and absorbent for wearing post-shower.

What to Consider
  • We’d love it even more if it had a hood.

If you expect a lot from your robe, the Ugg Robinson will deliver. Want a robe that’s absorbent enough for after a shower? Check. Comfortable for lounging around watching TV? Check. Warm enough to take a nap in like a blanket? Check.

After putting this robe through its paces during testing, we were pleased to see that it held up very well after washing with no wrinkles, shedding, lingering odors, or other signs of wear. We loved the luxurious material that had some heft to it but felt lightweight at the same time. The fit is roomy, but we liked how the belt stayed tied for a snugger fit. The pockets are a plus — we can confirm they are spacious enough to hold a phone and even a TV remote, so it’s a no-brainer to wear when relaxing on the couch. If we had to change anything, we would add a hood, but this comfortable robe is cozy and warm enough without it.

RH Luxury Plush Long Robe

Why We Love It
  • You can customize this for a special touch.

What to Consider
  • You’ll need to roll up the sleeves if you’re doing anything besides relaxing.

Nothing quite says “mine” like monogrammed clothing. A monogrammed robe, however, is on another level and makes time spent lounging at home extra special. We love this soft, plush robe from Restoration Hardware. We were impressed by both the lush fabric and the robe’s construction. There was no shedding during the entire testing period, even after washing. It kept us warm without overheating, making this one we’ll grab during any season. It’s not too absorbent to dry you off completely post-shower, but you’ll want to towel off quickly so you can pull on what feels more like a warm hug than an ordinary robe. The belt was snug yet comfortable and stayed securely in place the entire time we wore it. The sleeves are a bit long, but rolling them up is a small price to pay for such luxurious comfort. Add a single initial or a three-letter monogram to the left chest and you’ve got a special gift for someone (including yourself).

The Details: XS-XL | 100 percent poly-plush | Machine washable

Why We Love It
  • This warm, fuzzy robe stays soft without shedding.

What to Consider
  • The sleeves and belt are quite long.

This cozy robe from Barefoot Dreams was one of the most comfortable we’ve ever tried on. It’s made from incredibly soft and fuzzy polyester microfiber; we were impressed to see that it didn’t shed or leave lint all over the place. It even stayed wrinkle-free the entire time during testing, and though we did notice a slight difference in the fuzziness after washing, there was no discoloration.

Wearing this robe felt on par with being wrapped in a blanket. If you run warm, you might feel a little overheated in this robe — it’s definitely one for the colder weather. This robe was quite long, including the sleeves and belt. It’s roomy and stretchy, so you’ll be fine ordering your normal size. We liked that there were no scratchy tags or zippers, and we appreciated the roomy pocket for our phone. It’s also pretty absorbent — this is something you won’t mind pulling on while you’re damp after a shower.

Parachute Waffle Robe
PHOTO: Parachute
Why We Love It
  • It’s cozy yet lightweight enough to wear all year.

What to Consider
  • The shorter length might be too short if you’re on the taller size.

Robes are meant to be cozy, but too much of a good thing can lead to being uncomfortably warm. That’s why we love this breathable waffle knit robe from Parachute. It looks and feels like a bathrobe you’d find at a luxury hotel, though we’re more than happy to wear it around our house. It’s got a roomy fit that provides ample coverage. We liked that it’s machine washable, and the material seemed to hold up well after a wash (we hung it to dry to ensure it wouldn’t shrink).

We’ll admit we had our eye on this beauty for a while now, and it did not disappoint. As much as we love a thick, fuzzy robe, we like even more that we can reach for this lightweight robe any day of the year, much like a favorite cardigan sweater. It’s definitely become part of our post-shower ritual, and every time we feel cozy without being overheated. We love the shorter length of this robe (it hit us at about tea length). It runs true to size and is roomy enough to layer pajamas beneath it. The bell sleeves are a bit large: be sure to roll them up when washing your face or brushing your teeth. We like that there’s spacious pockets on either side deep enough to carry your phone around.

The Details: XS-XL | 100 percent Turkish cotton | Machine washable

Why We Love It
  • The bamboo fabric is sustainable and feels incredibly soft and cozy while still being absorbent enough to wear postshower.

What to Consider
  • The belt loops seem a bit too delicate for the long haul.

As a fabric, bamboo is seemingly infused with superpowers. It stops odors and allergens in their tracks, feels supremely soft, and is made from sustainable fibers. So it’s natural that we’d love this bamboo robe from Cariloha. We loved how soft and luxurious this material felt, though it’s got enough heft to keep us cozy. This robe felt like it was made for us. The sleeves landed right at the wrists, and the length was below the knees. It draped well without restricting our movement, and we liked how the belt was able to stay tied securely. The interior is soft but more absorbent than the outer material, which means you can wear it straight out of the bath or shower to dry off. We liked the roomy pockets on either side that were perfect for stowing our phone. If we had to improve anything, it would be to reinforce the delicate belt loops, but that won’t stop us from reaching for this robe day after day.

The Details: S/M-L/XL | Viscose from bamboo interior; micro-polyester blend exterior | Machine washable

Why We Love It
  • It feels luxuriously silky, and the pattern is beautiful enough to be seen in public with.

What to Consider
  • It only comes in one size.

Some robes are more about function than style, which is why we love a kimono. Even if you have no intention of leaving your home (or the couch), you can still look great in this short silky robe from KIM+ONO. It’s made from polyester charmeuse that feels so luxurious, we’d find any excuse to slip into this kimono, day or night. The exterior looks and feels silky smooth, while the interior has more of a matte appearance. This is a thinner robe, but it’s comfortable to wear even if it’s not as plush and soft as others on our list. It washes up well, but it is prone to wrinkles, so be sure to hang this up carefully in between uses. This is a great option when you need something to throw on while getting ready, but it can also serve as your main robe during the warmer months. The hardest thing about this robe is choosing which color to get the gorgeous butterfly and peony pattern in.

The Details: One size fits most | Polyester charmeuse | Machine washable

Why We Love It
  • This lightweight robe feels luxuriously soft.

What to Consider
  • The belt is a bit slippery and can come untied easily.

Not every relaxing situation calls for a fluffy, warm robe. If you just want to cover up after a shower or add an extra layer to pajamas, a kimono is a stylish way to lounge around. We loved this one made of Pima cotton from The Company Store. The fabric is soft and delicate without being flimsy; in fact, we were quite impressed with the quality of the material that held up well even after a wash. The length of the robe and the sleeves were just fine and the robe itself was roomy, though true to size.

This kimono is proof that a robe doesn’t have to be fleecy to feel soft and luxurious on your skin. We prefer a more lightweight robe, and this was perfect for wearing while lounging or getting dressed. The silky belt has a way of loosening, which is why we appreciated that it was attached to the kimono so it wouldn’t slip off completely. The side pockets were a plus.

Why We Love It
  • This robe is cozy and comfortable without feeling too heavy or warm.

What to Consider
  • This robe tends to run large, so purchase accordingly.

This is not one of those robes that wraps you up in a fuzzy cocoon, and we’re more than okay with that. This roomy yet wonderfully lightweight wrap from Cuyana offers coverage without making us feel overheated. We love that the belt ties firmly in place despite the slippery, soft material, too. In short, this short robe is perfect loungewear for lazy mornings (or anytime) in late spring and summer. This luxurious robe has the look and feel of silk, but it’s made from charmeuse, so it’s washable. You can put it in the wash on cold, but we opted to wash it by hand and dry flat, then hang it to get the wrinkles out, and it held up well with no shedding or discoloration. Speaking of color, the robe we tested was in a beautiful jade, but you can also choose from black, sky blue, pearl, and palm (bright green).

A Cuyana Washable Charmeuse Robe hanging on a door hook

Why We Love It
  • It’s cozy yet lightweight and drapes well over expectant mothers.

What to Consider
  • The sleeves are shorter by design for easier movement.

Some robes are required to go above and beyond in that they need to keep both mama and her little bun(s) in the oven cozy. That’s why we love the Feel Good Delivery robe from Storq. It’s lightweight yet cozy and perfect for wearing both during and after your pregnancy.

If you’re worried that a maternity robe looks more like a tarp with a belt, know that this one made from modal and spandex looks and feels luxurious. It’s roomy enough to drape nicely without any fear of a (ward)robe malfunction. It’s perfect for layering over pajamas, but it’s also nice for right out of the shower. We liked that it washed up well without any pilling or discoloration. This robe combines comfort with function. The sleeves run shorter, so if you wear this postpartum, there’s no need to roll them up to comfortably hold your little one or change a diaper.

Why We Love It
  • It’s silky and sumptuous, but it’s also machine washable.

What to Consider
  • It’s not the warmest robe on our list.

There’s nothing like the feel of a silk robe. This one from Lunya made getting ready for the day feel like a luxury — and, yes, it was heaven to finish the day wearing it, too. We were impressed by the high-quality silk fabric that was, miraculously, machine washable. It is prone to wrinkles, but it washes up well. This is not one of those robes to slip in right out of the shower nor is it one that will make you feel toasty warm, but it’s wonderful for lounging. We thought it was a nice touch to have cuffs at the sleeves to keep them from billowing. The rest of the robe, however, is flowy and comfortable, though we did size up for an even more comfortable fit. Just be sure to tie your belt tight, as the silky material makes this robe a bit tricky to keep securely closed.

Other Luxury Bathrobes We Liked

There were a few other luxurious bathrobes we tested that are worth considering, although we found a few issues that kept them off our main list.

Parachute Classic Turkish Cotton Robe: This comfortable robe made us feel like we were wrapped up in a fluffy hotel towel. However, it is a bit bulky and oversized, so consider sizing down so you’re not swimming in it.

Peacock Alley Pique Bathrobe: We didn’t feel overheated at all in this robe, so it’s a good choice for all-season wear. However, we found it needed a wash before wearing to make it softer and less scratchy.

Our Testing Process

We tested 38 bathrobes, wearing each one at least five times during a two-week period. We slipped them on after showering to note their absorbency and wore them while lounging around to note their comfort. We also washed each robe according to the care label at least once during testing and observed any changes in the material or fit. We made the final selections for our best luxury bathrobes list based on quality, comfort, design, and fit.

Tips for Buying a Luxury Bathrobe

Note the care instructions

Reading the care label is good practice for any clothing you purchase, of course, but it’s especially important to prevent your roomy, soft robe from shrinking, shedding, or getting scratchy. Most of the robes that made our list are machine washable, but you’ll want to note water temperature and cycle for best results. If you’ve got a silk or satin robe that’s machine washable, it’s probably better to slip it into a delicates bag first, and you may need to air dry them.

Think about how you plan to use it

Not all robes are made the same, so you’ll want to consider when you want to wear it. If you like slipping on a robe straight out of the shower, then opt for a fluffy, absorbent one that can dry you off. Want to curl up and watch some TV? Choose a robe that feels more like a wearable blanket. Of course, you’ll get overheated if you try to wear that same robe while you’re blowing out your hair or putting on makeup, so you might prefer a thinner, less voluminous robe for those activities. You might also consider getting a lighter robe for the warmer weather, and save that thick spa robe for chilly evenings.

Prioritize comfort

Some people will factor in brand names and styles when selecting a bathrobe, but ultimately the best robe for you will be the one that is the most comfortable. Think about what materials you prefer when slipping on a robe at the end of the day — do you want something warm and plush, or would you prefer something more breathable? Do certain fabrics irritate your skin? Do you find it uncomfortable if a robe hangs above or below your knees? You may want to purchase a size up to have a more roomy fit. If you consider comfort first, you're sure to find a robe that you'll look forward to wearing every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the softest material for a robe?

Softness is in the eye (and feel) of the beholder. But when it comes to robes, the softest, most luxurious are usually made from either plush cotton (think: velour) or satin. Typically, any clothing made from synthetic fabrics and wool tend to be more scratchy.

  • How should I pack a bathrobe?

The most packable robes are going to be made from silk or satin, while other robes are going to be more bulky in your suitcase. There are many ways to fold a robe, but you can try laying the robe flat, then folding the robe in half lengthwise by placing one sleeve over the other. After you fold the robe in half, bring the top collar part down over the robe, and then fold it in half again from bottom to top so that it’s more of a square shape. Fold the bathrobe in half again if needed, depending on how long it is. We also recommend packing cubes to help you save space.

  • Can I take the bathrobes from hotels?

It’s proper hotel guest etiquette to ask before you take anything from your room. Some luxury hotels might encourage you to take that fluffy spa robe home as a gift, while other hotels will allow you to purchase the robe. If it’s the latter, expect to see a charge on your final bill should decide to take it home.

  • Can bathrobes be substitutes for towels?

This will depend on the bathrobe's material. If a bathrobe is made from an absorbent material, like cotton or microfiber often used to make towels, then it may be absorbent enough to thoroughly dry you after a shower or bath. However, other materials like polyeste or silk won't absorb water well and may leave you uncomfortably damp if you put on a robe immediately after bathing.

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

While writing this story, Barbara Bellesi Zito got cozy in her own waffle knit robe (she works from home) while perusing luxury robe insights from the Travel + Leisure team. She’s also gotten to try a few top-notch hotel robes, but if she were pressed to pick a favorite, it’s the light gray, hoodie-style robe at The Logan Philadelphia, Curio Collection by Hilton, which is a nod to the town’s fictional hero, Rocky Balboa.
