Chris Wood's passion for acting was evident at an early age. Inspired to pursue theater in part by his competitive relationship with his older sister, Wood landed his first role at age 6, playing a rat in a youth production of "Pied Piper of Hamelin." In high school he made stop motion films, and starred in his own, self-made series, "Chris Wood: Action Man." After earning a degree in Music Theater from Elon University in North Carolina, Wood was cast in the national tour of "Spring Awakening." His first screen exposure was in the Amazon pilot "Bowsers" (Amazon, 2013), a musical comedy show set at a news website, that did not get a series order. The same year, he debuted in a recurring role on "The Carrie Diaries" (The CW, 2013-14), as Adam Weaver, Carrie Bradshaw's first lover.

A recurring role in "The Vampire Diaries" (The CW, 2009-17) began in 2014. He played Malachai 'Kai' Parker, the main antagonist on season six of the show. In 2016, he was set to be a series regular on the thriller "Containment" (The CW, 2015-16). A remake of the Danish show "Corden" (vtm, 2014-), "Containment" focused on the efforts to contain a mysterious outbreak in Atlanta. Wood next joined the cast of superhero series "Supergirl" (CBS/CW 2015- ) as Mor-El, the superheroine's love interest. Although Wood only appeared in the show's second and third seasons, the series had a more lasting effect as he and star Melissa Benoist were engaged in February 2019.
