FTC attempts to block Kroger's acquisition of Albertsons

Kroger's attempt to purchase rival grocery chain Albertsons is in limbo, with the Federal Trade Commission attempting to block the proposed merger, WLWT reported. “The environment for businesses is that you really have to fight the FTC to have a merger,” said David Brasington, PhD, the James C. and Caroline Kautz Chair in Political Economy and economics professor in the University of Cincinnati's Carl H. Lindner College of Business.

This eyeless cavefish grows extra taste buds

Research led by Joshua Gross, PhD, in the UC Department of Biological Sciences, revealed the blind cavefish has a similar number of taste buds as surface fish from birth up to the age of 5 months. Then, these taste buds gradually increase in number and start appearing on the head and chin during adulthood, particularly at around 18 months of age.

A teacher in the West Clermont Local School District for over 22 years, Michelle Dohrmann (nie Michelle Holly) is among four finalists for the 2025 Ohio Teacher of the Year award. Dohrmann holds three degrees from UC: a bachelor's and master's from the UC School of Education and an undergraduate degree in English from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Materials science student seeks to improve health care

At the University of Cincinnati, innovation is a pillar of education, something that drew doctoral candidate Yuxin Wang to continue her studies here. Under the guidance of Professor Donglu Shi, Wang is researching how nanomaterials can be used in medical drug delivery and diagnostics to improve health care outcomes. She was recently named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by the College of Engineering and Applied Science.

Campaign proposals could have unintended economic effects

Government interventions that attempt to help consumers could lead to other problems, a University of Cincinnati economist told ABC News. Vice President Kamala Harris has unveiled the economic agenda for her presidential campaign, which includes a ban on grocery price gouging, a $25,000 subsidy for first-time homebuyers and child tax credits. To evaluate the proposals, ABC News turned to economists including Michael Jones, PhD, assistant professor of economics in the University of Cincinnati's Carl H. Lindner College of Business.
