Road traffic crashes kill 1.19 million people in the world every year and are the leading cause of death for young people aged 5-29.

The UN General Assembly adopted a new resolution on road safety on 24 June 2024 urging Member States and relevant actors to accelerate and scale up efforts to implement the Global Plan of Action for Road Safety, make road safety a political priority and ensure its relevance in the broader sustainable development agenda.

To raise awareness and mobilize action to address this issue, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, Mr. Jean Todt, and JCDecaux are launching a new UN Global Campaign for Road Safety that will be rolled out in some 80 countries and a thousand cities over the next two years.
