SAQ Alexanderson transmitter on XMAS eve

SAQ, the call sign of the 1920s vintage Alexanderson transmitter in Grimeton, Sweden, is set to be on the air for its annual Christmas Eve transmission December 24th at 0800 UTC.

SAQ transmits CW with up to 200 kW on 17.2 kHz. Tune-up is scheduled to begin at around 0730 UTC, with the holiday message transmitted on December 24 at 0800 UTC.

The transmitter set consists in all essentials of three parts, the driving motor, a gear drive and the high frequency generator, commonly called the alternator. They are assembled on a solid base of steel. The weight of the complete transmitter set is about 50 tons.

AWA Hartley Transmitter video on Youtube

The Antique Wireless Association has a new video with Andy, K0SM, discussing the 1920s style Hartley transmitters that he built and uses on the air, most recently in the AWA Bruce Kelley 1929 QSO Party.

I thought that this might be of interest to the local ham community.

Check out old Radio Shack and Allied Catalogs online

Back a few months ago I posted a brief story about the demise of Radio Shack. Generations of home electronics hobbyists, ham radio enthusiasts and computer geeks spent their growth-spurt years hanging around their local Radio Shack stores. I was one of them. The company's heyday ran from the 1970s through the late 1990s, when it rode the CB radio craze as the largest retailer in the market, and then transformed into a creditable maker of computer gear. Ham Radio and Scanners were also a big part of that heyday.

Well now you can go back and view your favorite old Radio Shack catalogs on line. Thanks to the folks at RadioShackCatalogs.com. At this website you will be able to view these old 1939-2011 Radio Shack and Tandy Electronics' catalogs, sale flyers, brochures, and more...year by year...page by page.

What's unique about this website is that the catalogs are presented as a VIRTUAL catalog, in a "page-flipping" format. This gives you the experience of paging-through an actual Radio Shack catalog. They also have old sales flyers and even TV commercials along with lots of company history.

Check it out here: http://www.radioshackcatalogs.com/index.html

You can also view old Allied Radio catalogs at this site: http://www.alliedcatalogs.com/

I spent an hour last night looking back at some of the cool stuff I enjoyed in my youth. Take a look for yourself, I think you'll have some fun!

Vintage Korean and Vietnam war Survival Radio

A few weeks ago a friend gave me a couple of old tube type portable survival radios that had been sitting in his basement. The radios are both Hoffman RT-159/URC-4 models. One is Army green and the other bright yellow. Both are in pretty good condition. They are dual band transceivers set up to transmit and receive on the air band emergency channels 121.5 Mhz and 243.0 Mhz. One of the coolest things are the telescoping dipole antennas that you can unfold and set for either VHF or UHF.

I started to do some research on the history of this radio and found it dates back to the early 1950's. One of these days I will have to try to find a power source to try and see if they will function (though I better use a dummy load, as both frequencies are still the main aircraft emergency channels). If you know anything about these radios, please leave a comment on this blog entry or e-mail me through my QRZ e-mail address.

Here is a link to an interesting article about the Hoffman RT-159A/URC-4: http://www.eetimes.com/design/power-management-design/4006313/Retro-wireless-Hoffman-RT-159A-URC-4-survival-radio
