Fulton Amateur Radio Club - General Class - starts 9/5/24

General Class Instruction - Press Release - 8/15/24

General Class Amateur Radio Exam Instruction Offered

Starting on Thursday, September 5, the Fulton Amateur Radio Club will host a free 10-week course designed for Technician Class licensees who are interested in obtaining their General Class Amateur (Ham) Radio license.

The class will meet on Thursday evenings from 7:00-9:00 pm in the lower level of the Oswego County Office Building, across from Mimi's Restaurant, Route 481, Fulton, NY. Class dates are September 5, 12, 19, 26, October 3, 10, 17, 24, November 7. The exam will be administered on Thursday, November 14.

There are many reasons to upgrade. General Class licensees have access to many more frequencies, some of which allow for around-the-world wireless communication without the need for intermediate infrastructure (such as the internet, cell towers, repeaters, etc.). More communications modes and new technical opportunities are also available.

The course material resembles that which was covered in the Technician exam, with more in-depth focus on high frequency (HF) operation and advanced operating modes. Topics will include operating effectively using single sideband (SSB) on HF, digital modes, solar effects on HF propagation, test instruments, practical electronic circuits, and antennas.

For more information contact Redd Swindells, AI2N, at ai2n(at)twcny.rr.com. Potential students are requested to preregister to assure proper course resource preparation.

NY Ham Online VE Testing - VEs Needed!

 Hi there!

Myself and a couple other hams are looking to recruit VEs from across the state for online VE sessions. The goal is to make more test sessions available online for current / future hams in NY state and the surrounding area while also promoting the local clubs nearest them. We'd love to partner with any VEs or Club VE teams.

Contact Shaun N2EWC ([email protected]) for more info.

Possible online VE Testing for Amateur Radio licensing exams

As we navigate the present demands of COVID-19 social distancing and stay at home guidance, many Hams are still interested in taking licensing exams. Most radio groups have  postponed or canceled their meetings and Hamfests where VE testing would have normally taken place. Several groups around the country are presently running remote testing trials to come up with long-term on-line testing options. The ARRL and other VE groups are presently evaluating these trial programs and hope to have new testing options available in the near future.

FCC planning to mandate all Licensees to have FRN; FCC Registration Number

The FCC has recently notified VEC's of upcoming Commission Registration System (CORES) changes and its impact to new radio operators.  In the near future the FCC will require all FCC Registrants to establish an FCC account containing an FCC Username (a valid email address), which will be linked to their FCC Registration Number (FRN). In the past, use of a licensees Social Security number was allowed instead of the FRN. This will also affect amateurs upgrading or renewing their license.

Learn more details of this change on the Anchorage ARC webpage:

Liverpool ARC - Extra Class - coming in March 2019

Hello everyone

Here is the schedule for the Amateur Extra Class in March.  Anyone interested in attending OR presenting any part of this program is asked to send an email to [email protected].  This allows us to be able to maintain a complete distribution list for any updates or additions.  We will distribute a list of attendees to everyone so you might be able to partner up for travel or study.  Please note that this program is open to ANY current General Class license holder irrespective of membership.  Anyone (brave souls) interested in joining the class without the General Class license will need to pass that exam before they can take the Extra Class exam.

We encourage everyone to obtain the ARRL License Manual prior to the start of class.  Also, we have found that anyone who regularly utilizes any of the websites dedicated to the ARRL Question Pool more than DOUBLES their chance on passing the final exam.  Use that tool to identify the areas of weakness so you are able to utilize your study and class time to improve your understanding.

Thanks for your interest in advancing your skills in Amateur Radio to take full advantage of the added (and less crowded) bandwidth.
