F1 Canadian Grand Prix: Charles Leclerc leads driver rankings ahead of Round 9 in Montreal

Ayrton Ostly
USA TODAY

The crown jewel of the Formula 1 season is in the books. The Monaco Grand Prix saw a home winner for the first time since 1931 but at the cost of an exciting race. First-lap contact between Haas' Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg as well as Red Bull's Sergio Perez knocked all three out and stopped the race.

After the restart, the top 10 stayed in the same position for the remaining 75 laps. Though there wasn't much on-track action, some drivers shined brighter than others. Here's how the latest power rankings look:

2024 Formula One driver rankings: Pre-Canadian Grand Prix

1. Charles Leclerc, Ferrari

Most recent race result: First

The last time the Monaco Grand Prix was won by a driver from Monaco, World War II was more than a decade away. Leclerc finally shrugged off disappointments in 2021 and 2022 to convert a pole position to victory. He always feel pressure in his home race and he broke through with a dominant weekend that never looked in doubt.

2. Oscar Piastri, McLaren

Most recent race result: Second

Piastri qualified second, 0.154 seconds behind Leclerc, and converted that to his first podium of the season. He was the lead McLaren in four of the five sessions in the weekend (two of three practices, qualifying, and the Grand Prix race). If not for damage sustained on Lap 1, he might have had a chance at passing Leclerc on track. Still, an impressive weekend for the second-year driver.

3. Yuki Tsunoda, VCARB

Most recent race result: Eighth

Tsunoda banked his sixth points finish of the season with the best Monaco result of his career. He was the second-best Red Bull-affiliated driver of the day behind only championship leader Max Verstappen. He outperformed teammate Daniel Ricciardo in every session and continues to be a star of the 2024 Formula 1 season.

4. Pierre Gasly, Alpine

Most recent race result: 10th

Both Gasly and teammate Esteban Ocon had surprisingly good pace for what's considered one of the slower cars in the field. Gasly shined in qualifying and managed 10th on the grid despite issues in Friday's practice sessions. Despite a crash with Ocon on Lap 1 of the race, he earned his first top-10 result of the year.

5. Alex Albon, Williams

Most recent race result: Ninth

Williams weren't expected to perform well in Monaco given their reputation for pace in high-speed, low-downforce tracks. But Albon made it into the top 10 in qualifying for the first time by just 0.069 seconds on his final run. He made the most of it during the race by staying behind Tsunoda and earning the team's first points finish of the season.

6. Lando Norris, McLaren

Most recent race result: Fourth

Norris was behind Piastri for much of the weekend which is surprising given his recent form (win in Miami, second in Imola). He didn't put a foot wrong all weekend but couldn't keep up with his teammate. Ferrari ensured he didn't build enough of a gap to George Russell behind during the race to have time to pit and challenge for a podium position. If not for Carlos Sainz getting his place back on the restart, Norris likely would've had another podium result.

7. Carlos Sainz, Ferrari

Most recent race result: Third

Sainz was behind Leclerc all weekend but still put together a solid qualifying and race performance. A bit of luck from race officials kept him in third place on the restart following the Lap 1 mayhem. If not for that, he'd have been much farther down the order. He gets a nod in the top 10 here for shrugging off that early issue and earning his first podium result in the last four races.

8. Max Verstappen, Red Bull

Most recent race result: Sixth

The three-time defending champion struggled more in Monaco than any other event this season. The Red Bull struggled with handling the bumps and curbs of the street circuit and he couldn't completely overcome those issues. If not for brushing the wall on his final run in qualifying, Verstappen could've started farther up the order. He still massively outperformed teammate Sergio Perez who started the race in 16th.

9. George Russell, Mercedes

Most recent race result: Fifth

Russell got the better of teammate Lewis Hamilton in qualifying and was just 0.001 seconds behind Norris in fourth. That's not bad for the fourth-best car in the field. He tried to take the fight to Norris and the leaders early on in the race before being told to back out of it to save tires. He handled constant pressure from Verstappen well in the final part of the race.

10. Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes

Most recent race result: Seventh

Hamilton opted out of an upgraded front wing in Monaco because only one was available and any contact would leave him reverted back to the old spec. That likely led to a slight pace difference between him and Russell in qualifying and the race. But again, strong practice pace (first in Practice 1, second in Practice 2, third in Practice 3) didn't translate over the rest of the weekend.
