When Full House returns, it will be short two actresses and one key family member.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen who together played Michelle Tanner will not be joining the cast of Fuller House, the Netflix revival of the beloved (by some) ’90s television series. The show’s executive producer made the announcement on Friday. “Although Ashley and Mary-Kate will not be a part of Fuller House, I know how much Full House has meant to them and they are still very much considered family," executive producer Robert L. Boyett told The Hollywood Reporter.

While sad for fans, it’s not exactly surprising. After the Full House revival was announced, the Olsen twins claimed not to have heard about the series’ return from their former co-stars. “I’m shocked I haven’t heard from John [Stamos],” Mary-Kate Olsen said. John “Uncle Jesse” Stamos tweeted that Olsen’s claim was “bulls–t.” (That tweet has since been deleted.) Clearly there was some tension in the Tanner house. Stamos later wrote that he and Mary-Kate had a “sweet talk” to presumably clear the air and hopefully get at least one of the twins to say “you got it, dude,” to the idea of joining the reunion. Alas, it that wasn’t to be. Probably because the Olsen twins not only renounced acting back in 2012, but have their four hands full with their billion-dollar fashion empire, including their wildly successful label, Elizabeth and James. Compared to their other former co-stars like, say, Candace Cameron Bure or Jodie Sweetin, they have a busy schedule and a Netflix series wasn’t part of their five-year plan.

In response to the news, John Stamos, who played Uncle Jesse on the show, tweeted his one-word response, “#heartbroken” (Did he try asking them to “have mercy!”?):

“I understand they’re in a different place and I wish them the best,” Stamos added in a subsequent tweet. “I promise you will not be dissapointed [sic] with our reunion and spin off!!”

Stamos posted some further thoughts on this subject to his Facebook page (what, you don’t follow his Facebook page?): “Just so you reporters know – this is not a money gig for any of us. Quite the opposite. We want to give the fans what they deserve for supporting us for so many years,” Stamos wrote. “We all just want to have fun – do it in a classy way on Netflix and have a good time. Sad that a few don’t share the rest of the cast’s opinion – I can only wish them the best.”

In addition to Stamos, Bure, and Sweetin, the Fuller House cast include Andrea Barber, who played Kimmy Gibbler, and Dave Coulier will also return as Uncle Joey. Talks are still underway to bring back Bob Saget and Lori Loughlin.

The series is set to premiere on Netflix in 2016.
