The Oscar nominations 2024 run the gamut, celebrating everything from auteur-driven blockbusters (hi, Barbie!) to meticulously recreated historical dramas (The Zone of Interest, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro). The top contender at the 96th Academy Awards somehow manages to be both at once: That, of course, would be Oppenheimer, which leads the pack with an impressive 13 total nominations. It’s followed closely by the equally arty Poor Things, which nabbed 11 nods, and Flower Moon, with 10.

There are surprises to be found within the list, like America Ferrera and Sterling K. Brown’s nominations in the supporting categories; there are, of course, also a few major snubs, particularly concerning Barbie’s two main creative forces. (Though it’s entirely possible that the rage stoked by those omissions could wind up benefiting Barbie in the long run.) Some talked-about films like Saltburn and May December got entirely or nearly blanked by the Academy; others, like Society of the Snow and American Fiction, had surprisingly strong showings. And though we’ve got a pretty good idea which of these nominated movies will walk away with actual gold—for more, check out our full list of Oscar winner predictions—it’s very possible that the 96th Academy Awards will hold a few surprises when they’re officially handed out on Sunday, March 10.
