The Best Foundations For Every Skin Type, Tried and Tested

best foundations 2024

Finding the best foundation for your skin can be a challenge at the best of times. It all comes down to what you want. Are you after a dewy look or prefer to keep things matte? Full coverage or sheer? There’s also the undertone to think about. Warm or cool? Do you want your exact shade? Or something to give you a little colour?

How to choose the best foundation for your skin

“You want your foundation to even out the complexion and make the skin smooth and dewy,” says make-up artist Lucy Burt. “I like light buildable textures that feel hydrated and radiant but look like your natural skin.” Get it right and the perfect foundation formula can make you look flawless, with little need for any additional make-up. Get it wrong and it can look cakey. The idea is to look as natural as possible; to conceal any blemish and smooth over skin tone and surface for the ultimate blank canvas finish.

When it comes to choosing between luminous and matte, Burt recommends somewhere in the middle. “I feel that a candlelight glow and a touch of iridescence in a foundation is the secret ingredient to beautiful skin and key to that light reflective radiance that I love so much.” For those with oilier skin, this is where your setting powders come in to matte over any extra shine. As for coverage, it depends. “A full coverage foundation is ideal for a velvety air brushed finish because it tends to dry and mesh as a satin layer on top of the skin,” says Burt. This is ideal for those with skin conditions like pigmentation, acne or rosacea. However, for those with blemish-free skin or with freckles that they don’t want to cover up, opt for a sheer, soft-focus finish to let the skin shine through. “Sculpt and contour first and use a sheer tint buffed over the top for a translucent traceless finish,” adds Burt.

Another thing to factor in is consistency. From stick foundations to creams, there is a wealth to choose from. Stick foundations can double up as concealers and so are great if you’re on the go, whereas creams can offer the hydrating benefits of a skincare serum.

Whatever your preference, always remember to hydrate your skin with a good moisturiser or serum before applying your foundation of choice. Burt also recommends prepping the skin with a clay mask to gently exfoliate the skin first. Another tip is to use a primer, which can help smooth fine lines and help the foundation to stay on longer. She also recommends using a flat foundation brush or kabuki-style blender to build coverage, using your fingertips to blend, tap and press in. “The warmth of your fingertips will create the flawless finish.”

Jones Road What the Foundation

Jones Road

What The Foundation Tinted Moisture Balm

Naomi Smart and Tracy Achonwa apply Jones Road What The Foundation for a natural and fuller coverage look.

  • Shades: 16
  • Coverage: buildable coverage
  • Finish: luminous
  • Longevity: long lasting, but set with a setting powder or spray if you have oily skin

Why it’s Vogue-approved:

An excellent foundation for mature skin, this cream nourishes the complexion while naturally camouflaging flaws. Its balmy formula is full of skincare heroes, including moisture-attracting sodium hyaluronate and a blend of skin-conditioning oils that dry skin types will love. Smoothed on with the fingers, it blends easily to even out discolouration, but you can also build up coverage by applying it with a dense make-up brush. “Don’t be intimidated by this foundation’s thick appearance – it has a melting formula that blends seamlessly with natural oils on the skin for a flattering, undetectable finish. While it’s definitely more suited to dry complexions, it adds a gorgeous, lasting glow to my oil-prone skin and I love that it builds to conceal dark spots without looking overdone.” – Tracy Achonwa, beauty writer.

Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation

Beauty director Jess Diner swatches Chanel Les Beiges Foundation.

Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation SPF 25

Why it’s Vogue-approved:

With a blend of blurring pigments, antioxidants, and reflective powders, this cult classic is the foundation to know for skin that looks like yours, but with a tad more polish. It gives the complexion a sun-kissed glow, boasting a formula that mattifies oil without compromising on radiance. Then there is its consistency – a silky, serum-like fluid – that is hydrating, comfortable and weightless on the skin. One to keep stocked for your summer soirees, it keeps you looking fresh-faced for several hours of wear and does not separate even as temperatures rise.

Charlotte Tilbury Unreal Skin Sheer Glow Tint

Charlotte Tilbury Unreal Skin Sheer Glow Tint

  • Shades:
  • Coverage: buildable
  • Finish: luminous
  • Longevity: lasts for hours with a good setting powder

Why it’s Vogue-approved:

Stick foundations often get a bad rap for being thick and cakey, but Charlotte Tilbury’s latest launch bucks that trend. Super hydrating, it effortlessly smooths over imperfections to unify the skin while imparting a subtle glow. Its formula includes vitamin E and hyaluronic acid to take care of your skin during wear, and with optical blur technology, it’s like an IRL filter for your face that blurs texture. What’s more, it's easily slotted into a handbag or clutch for touch-ups on the go, and thanks to its stick format, there are no surprise leaks.

Lisa Eldridge Skin Enhancing Tint

Lisa Eldridge Skin Enhancing Tint

If anyone knows what makes a good foundation, it’s Lisa Eldridge – the pro makeup artist behind countless Vogue covers celebrity red carpet looks. Her skin tint brings that expertise into beginner-friendly territory, with a foolproof fluid formula that gets you a great base with very little effort at all. Containing glycerin, squalane and salicylic acid, expect natural, seamless coverage, with the added benefits of refining actives that smooth skin texture over time. “I can’t get enough of this lightweight, beautifully dewy skin tint. Delivering next-level luminosity via the perfect balance of coverage and translucence, skin looks natural and healthy, rather than done. Obsessed doesn’t cut it.” – Hannah Coates, beauty and wellness editor

Givenchy Prisme Libre Skin-Caring Matte Foundation

Givenchy Prisme Libre Skin Caring Matte Foundation

  • Shades: 30
  • Coverage: medium to full
  • Finish: luminous matte
  • Longevity: lasts all day

Any foundation that prioritises skin health is a foundation we can get behind. Givenchy’s Prisme Libre does just that, working to correct and protect your complexion with a skincare-based formula. Its hero ingredients are pink clay and and anatto extract, both of which balance oils and refine pores over time, while mother of pearl pigments reflect light to give a healthy glow without unwanted shine. When we tried it, we were most impressed by the coverage achieved with a modest pump, and the airbrushed effect that stayed pristine and in place even on warmer days. “This is my go-to foundation for full coverage in humid weather, because it offers seamless, skinlike coverage of blemishes and has a formula that stays in place. What’s more, it‘s non-comedogenic and skin-caring – it has never caused breakouts on my acne-prone skin, which is no small thing!” – Tracy Achonwa, beauty writer

Pros: refines skin texture with consistent wear | long-wearing formula | matte with a natural-looking radiance | lightweight and breathable

Cons: pricey

Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation

Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation

  • Shades: 40
  • Coverage: customisable from light to full coverage
  • Finish: skin-like, demi-matte finish with subtle radiance
  • Longevity: long-lasting

Developed for the fast-paced glam rooms behind the scenes of fashion runway shows, Dior’s fluid foundation is the product of choice for a professional, seamless finish. Lightweight and long-wearing, it gives quick coverage that takes incredibly well to touch-ups, never feeling heavy or appearing cakey even when layered on. That is no doubt down to a formula dosed with hyaluronic acid and squalane, which hydrate and plump the skin for a naturally flawless, photo-ready look. The best part? Designed for quick changes backstage, it won’t separate on you as the day goes on, resisting water and staying put even during sports and summer heat.

Pros: travel-friendly, shatterproof bottle | water resistant | long-wearing | feels imperceptible on the skin | can be used on body blemishes

Cons: does not have a pump, but does have a dropper lid

Glossier Stretch Fluid Foundation

Glossier Stretch Fluid Foundation

  • Shades: 32 shades spanning five skin undertones
  • Coverage: medium coverage foundation which can be layered for a full coverage look
  • Finish: hydrated, dewy finish
  • Longevity: stays all day

Glossier’s long-awaited first foundation has arrived, and trust us when we say it will surpass your expectations. True to the brand’s clean girl style, its gel-cream formula feels weightless and leaves a radiant, skin-like glow. But it also boasts shine control and impressive coverage thanks to amino acid-coated pigments that melt into the skin. As with the stretch concealer, these pigments are designed to flex with skin and not settle into lines, giving make-up that undetectable, natural finish that we love.

Pros: nourishing formula with a weightless feel | 89 per cent skincare base including rosehip and antioxidant-rich plankton extract | fragrance and cruelty-free

Cons: not for those who prefer an ultra-matte finish

Oxygenetix Blemish Control Foundation

Oxygenetix Blemish Control Foundation

  • Shades: 14
  • Coverage: medium

Made to wear beautifully without compromising the health of your skin, it combines anti-inflammatory aloe vera with Ceravitae Complex and salicylic acid for a calmer, clearer complexion. It may be medicinal, but it is also very good make-up, with a balmy texture that lends an immaculate skin-like glow. We love it for treating a bad breakout – as does Kourtney Kardashian, who revealed it as her go-to foundation on Vogue Beauty Secrets.

Pros: provides sun protection | includes Ceravitae Complex which boosts oxygen within the skin | is breathable and comfortable | contains actives to clear clogged pores and bacteria

Cons: limited shade range

Maybelline Super Stay Skin Tint Foundation

Maybelline Super Stay Skin Tint Foundation + Vitamin C

  • Shades: 18
  • Coverage: light to medium
  • Finish: fresh-faced dewy finish
  • Longevity: stays in place without fading for up to 24 hours

Maybelline’s latest foundation is made for hot summer days when easy, breezy make-up is all you can bear. A serum formula with vitamin C to brighten skin over time, we love that it evens out redness and blemishes without completely masking the skin. If you like more coverage, you’ll be pleased with how it builds up to provide extra pigment, but we think it is best used as a light enhancement on low-effort days. It’s especially good as an affordable foundation for mature skin, with a hydrating formula that melts into the complexion without accentuating fine lines.

Pros: affordable | adds radiance to the skin | great for no make-up make-up looks | sweat and humidity resistant

Cons: can enhance shine on oilier skin types if used without setting powder

Dcypher Custom Foundation

Dcypher Custom Foundation

  • Shades: infinite
  • Coverage: can be tailored to your personal preference
  • Finish: can be chosen according to your skin type or preference
  • Longevity: long-lasting

No two shades of Dcypher’s foundation are the same, because each bottle is made to measure in a batch mixed for your exact hue. Powered by AI, the brand scans your skin tone via selfies that you provide, then lets you choose your desired coverage and finish to create a formula personalised for you. Sceptical? So were we, until we put it to the test, and got a shade match closer than any (of the many) foundations we’ve tried before. Eliminating waste and mismatched shades with bespoke bottles, this is a foundation we are very much here for.

Pros: perfect shade match is almost guaranteed | breathable, fine formula with a beautiful custom finish | made-to-order bottles mean you get a fresh foundation | free adjustments are available if your shade does not match

Cons: none, it really is a great foundation

Yves Saint Laurent All Hours Luminous Matte Foundation

YSL Beauty All Hours Foundation SPF20

  • Shades: 40
  • Coverage: buildable to full coverage
  • Finish: luminous matte skin-like finish
  • Longevity: lasts up to 24 hours

For a polished look, you can’t go wrong with YSL’s All Hours Foundation. Recently reformulated to a consistency much thinner than the original, it is comfortable, breathable and has a bare-faced feel on the skin. The smallest pump stretches to completely cover redness and dark spots without the need for concealer, yet looks believable because of a recipe rich in hyaluronic acid. A reliable foundation for weddings, graduations, proms – pretty much any big deal occasion – it gets our vote for giving the complexion a silken, lasting glow.

Pros: contains SPF | feels weightless | blurs pores | looks fresh from day to night | waterproof | non-greasy silicon formula is especially good for skin prone to shine | gives full coverage without an overdone look

Cons: silicon-based formula will repel your water-based primers, so if you use a primer, it will also need to be silicon-based

Make Up Forever HD Skin Liquid Foundation

Makeup Forever HD Skin Foundation

  • Shades: 40
  • Coverage: customisable from sheer to extra coverage
  • Finish: luminous skin like finish
  • Longevity: lasts 24 hours

Loved by pros for its photogenic finish that looks just as flawless up close, this foundation comes name-checked by celebrity and bridal make-up artists alike. It has a luminous formula that pairs well with both cream and powder products, and does not budge once set, guaranteeing a long-wearing base. Glowy without looking greasy, we like this pick for its customisable coverage – it can be mixed with a moisturiser to make a sheer tint or stippled on for completely faultless skin.

Pros: lightweight liquid formula | wide shade range includes shades for deep skin and hard-to-find olive undertones | flawless finish

Cons: dries in place, so needs to be used with a mist or finishing spray if you have very dry skin

Makeup By Mario Surreal Skin Foundation

Makeup By Mario Surreal Skin Foundation

  • Shades: 30
  • Coverage: medium, but buildable
  • Finish: radiant and skin-like
  • Longevity: you’ll get a full day’s wear (provided you use enough powder)

As the artist behind countless iconic celebrity red carpet momentsMario Dedivanovic is a make-up master that really needs no introduction. The first foundation from his namesake brand arrived to viral fanfare across the pond – so much so that influencers here have been footing the international shipping bill just to get their hands on it. If, like them, you can’t wait until its official Sephora UK launch this summer, we’ve put it through its paces to tell you all you need to know. Aside from its weightless formula – which we can attest has a finish that is simply surreal – this foundation boasts Moisture GripTM technology that seamlessly melts with all your other make-up products. Plus, with a mix of squalene and oils, it keeps skin hydrated around the clock, and is enhanced with microglitters for an instant glassy glow. It requires a little layering if you’re trying to conceal any major marks or blemishes, but thanks to its elevated formula there’s no danger of coverage appearing caked on.

Pros: luminous skin-like formula | long-wearing | layers well to give coverage with zero caking | coverage does not obscure natural beauty marks including freckles | contains skincare

Cons: this is a very dewy foundation which errs on the side of shiny as the day goes on. Perfect if you like a natural glow, but may not be ideal for oily skin

MAC Studio Fix Every-Wear All-Over Face Pen

MAC Studio Fix Every-Wear All-Over Face Pen

  • Shades: 33
  • Coverage: customisable
  • Finish: matte
  • Longevity: lasts up to 36 hours – or from the office to post-work drinks without creasing or accumulating shine

In many ways, MAC’s latest foundation proves the brand is as much of a make-up authority as it’s ever been. Its wide shade range caters to the palest and darkest complexions with warm, neutral and cool variations. Light and fluid, the formula is also self-setting and dries to a natural matte finish. The real clincher here, though, is a convenient pen tip that dispenses precisely the amount you need; an invaluable feature for make-up artists and the everyman after an application that’s more controlled. Doubling as a concealer, a little of this foundation goes a long way to hide all manner of sins, but it can also be sheered out for a look as natural as you like. As for its staying power? It’d be nothing short of criminal to wear a foundation for 36 hours in the name of testing – but judging from how well it held up over a long work day, it’s as reliable as they come.

Pros: offers precise application | travel-friendly and ideal for touch ups | waterproof formula keeps you covered in spite of sweat and humid weather | coverage is customisable from light to full | enriched with skin-caring ingredients including vitamin E and hyaluronic acid | has a pin stopper and twist and lock mechanism to prevent spillages

Cons: if you don’t take the time to master the lock mechanism, you could end up with a mess on your hands

KVD Beauty Good Apple Serum Foundation

KVD Beauty Good Apple Serum Foundation

  • Shades: 40
  • Coverage: full coverage that can be toned down with a beauty sponge or fluffy brush
  • Finish: natural looking, shine-free finish
  • Longevity: long-lasting with shine, sweat and humidity control

Think serum foundations are the barely-there reserve of those with blemish-free skin? Think again. KVD Beauty has changed the game with its Good Apple Serum foundation, which nourishes skin and delivers impressive coverage. Infused with antioxidant apple extract and glycerin, it grants a healthy, moisturised base, whilst quince leaf works throughout the day to keep excess oil at bay. Somehow, these ingredients combine to give a glow that endures all day – this one kept our skin in check from the rush hour commute to meetings across town and back. Where other foundations may have succumbed to sweat or, worse, begun to separate, it stayed intact and looked just as smooth as when it was applied.

Pros: enhanced with antioxidant-rich extracts | stays put | thin formula that feels like a serum on the skin | effectively conceals redness, acne and blemishes | controls shine without looking flat

Cons: best suited to combination/oily skin types

NARS Soft Matte Foundation

NARS Soft Matte Foundation

  • Shades: 34
  • Coverage: customisable from light up to full coverage
  • Finish: soft focus matte finish
  • Longevity: lasts for 16 hours of wear and is transfer proof once dry

You’ll be hard pressed finding a foundation that is as chic on your vanity as this one from NARS, and happily, its good looks aren’t limited to the sleek squeeze bottle. Inside is a formula unlike any matte foundation we’ve tried, which suspends finely milled powder in an impossibly thin liquid for the ultimate shine control. On the skin, it feels as though you’re wearing nothing at all, and it seamlessly smooths texture for a flawless complexion. What really sets this one apart though, is its budge-proof dry down. Amazingly, it doesn't smudge even with vigorous blotting, nor did it transfer when we wore it under a mask.

Pros: looks like skin | transfer-proof | doesn’t settle into lines | designed with Anti-Oxidation Complex so won’t change colour throughout the day | comfortable and lightweight

Cons: the lid can get messy as the opening is downward-facing

Huda Beauty Faux Filter Foundation Stick

Huda Beauty Faux Filter Skin Finish Foundation Stick

  • Shades: 39
  • Coverage: buildable from light to full coverage
  • Finish: filtered, glowy finish
  • Longevity: up to 10 hours of wear

Stick foundations are your ticket to a quick and easy base, and that’s especially true in the case of this one from Huda Beauty. With a bevelled edge that slots neatly under eyes and can be trained on all your facial features, a few shades of this stick will make easy work of your highlight and contour. As for the formula, it melts into skin to give a buttery, natural finish, and is easily diffused with a make-up brush or layered for fuller coverage. We were pleasantly surprised to discover that it has a lightweight feel on the face, as well as a moderate colour payoff that doesn’t mask the complexion.

Pros: easy to use | creamy, glide-on formula | quickly covers discolouration | can be used to spot conceal blemishes | portable and mess-free | non-comedogenic formula

Cons: you’ll need to sanitise the stick between uses with a spray like Isoclean

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Powder Foundation

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Powder Foundation

  • Shades: 50
  • Coverage: light to full coverage
  • Finish: blurred matte finish
  • Longevity: stays put until you take it off

Rihanna may have revived the powder foundation in the midst of a global mask mandate, but this is a product with use beyond those dark pandemic days. For starters, it stands up to sweat and humidity with impressive aplomb, plus smooths pores and gives matte coverage on well-primed skin. Pressed in with the accompanying sponge, it’s even capable of concealing blemishes – but if you ask us, it’s best used to set your make-up for a flawless finish. Buff it over high shine areas with a kabuki brush, and trust us when we say your skin will stay airbrushed all day long.

Pros: smooth formula that doesn’t crease | can be used to add airbrushed coverage to your make-up | perfect for on-the-go touch ups | comes in a compact with a mirror and sponge

Cons: you’ll need to follow with a bronzer or blush to bring back dimension to the face

Still looking for your perfect match? Below, Vogue rounds up the best foundations according to your skin type, colour and concern.

Best foundation for oily skin

Those whose skin is oily or combination will find a more matte formulation offers the best results, as it helps to minimise unwanted shine (caused by surface-dwelling oil), and imparts a velvety finish. Avoid going too heavy on the coverage – pigment can settle into pores and fine lines and leave a cakey finish – and opt for light or medium, buildable formulas. For example, this oil-free CC+ cream from IT Cosmetics uses charcoal, tea tree extract and hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin while concealing imperfections for a flawless matte finish. Despite being called a “balm”, the Kevyn Aucoin Foundation Balm takes its cues from dryer formulas, rather than the oil-based cleanser balms you might be thinking of. It’s mattifying without dulling the skin, and can be easily buffed onto a shiny T-zone throughout the day without disrupting the rest of your make-up. Plus, it comes in a travel-friendly pot.

For particularly reactive or highly blemish-prone skin, there is no better foundation than Oxygenetix Oxegenating Foundation SPF 25. Forget the rather un-sexy packaging, this imparts an even, second-skin finish, plus it’s non-comedogenic and oil-and fragrance-free, meaning it only does what it was made to do: make your skin look good. Elsewhere, Chantecaille’s Future Skin Oil-Free Foundation is rich with light-reflecting pigments that work to reduce imperfections, and can be built up for adjustable coverage.

Best foundation for dry skin

Look for words such as “glow” or “luminous” when choosing a foundation for dry skin, and seek out formulas with extra skincare ingredients. Hyaluronic acid and vitamin E are great options for those who suffer dry skin. Look to hydrating serums and primers to prep skin before applying a foundation, too. They will help ensure your foundation lasts, and that it feels comfortable on the skin. With hyaluronic acid, cordyceps and an SPF of 40, this hybrid serum-foundation, the Bobbi Brown Intensive Serum Foundation SPF40, will help to hydrate and soothe skin while delivering a luminous, even-toned complexion. Meanwhile, Clé De Peau Beauté’s Radiant Fluid Foundation Natural uses the brand’s signature Skin-Empowering Illuminator, a blend of five hero ingredients including Japanese pearl extract and platinum golden silk essence, to boost your cells’ reparative abilities all the while providing 24-hour long coverage.

This one is as long-wearing and skin-smoothing as the last, but with added grape seed oil to nourish and hydrate.

Best foundation for mature skin

The key rule for buying a foundation if you have mature skin is to opt for something lightweight, hydrating and glow-giving. Heavier formulas often settle into fine lines and can dull the skin’s natural healthy shine, so opt for products that contain skincare benefits. An ultra-lightweight, sheer formula, the Sisley Phyto-Teint Nude Foundation feels almost like a serum upon application, and delivers radiance with a natural-looking sheer coverage. The “Vita-Light” complex helps enhance your skin’s natural glow, giving you a lit-from-within look. The hyaluronic acid helps keep skin hydrated, plump and smooth all day long. Within the clever Shiseido Synchro Skin Radiant Lifting Foundation SPF30 lies a blend of transparent pearls, micro-crystals and advanced optical filters that add a dewy dimension to skin, while hydrating it. It works brilliantly for all skin types, and mature skins will love it for its ability to bring the skin to life.

Best foundation for sheer coverage

For skin that looks just like your skin, only more radiant, opt for a sheer foundation. Offering a natural finish while still providing decent coverage, it can be difficult to find a formula with staying power. Thankfully, though, make-up technology has advanced hugely in recent years, and today’s sheer, lightweight foundations offer a perfecting effect without looking like they’re there at all. Charlotte Tilbury knows a thing or two about creating brilliant make-up, and her latest addition, Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Foundation, is another triumph. Beautiful skin does exactly what it says on the tube. It’s a light-to-medium coverage foundation that delivers a real-skin finish, leaving you with a gorgeous healthy glow.
