The Crown superfans, rejoice: season six of the hit Netflix series makes its grand debut this week, airing on 16 November. The official season premiere was held in Los Angeles, and cast members such as Jonathan Pryce (Prince Philip) and Elizabeth Debicki (Princess Diana) were in attendance. Call it method dressing, but Debicki’s chic LBD nodded to one of her character’s most famous looks – Princess Diana’s “revenge dress”.

When Diana stepped out at the Serpentine summer party in June 1994, the royal’s black off-the-shoulder Christina Stambolian minidress – worn with a pearl and sapphire choker – made headlines across the world. The media christened it the “revenge dress”, as she wore it as a TV interview in which Prince Charles admitted infidelity was being broadcast. It’s one of her most iconic fashion looks, and perhaps Debicki wanted to reference it in a subtle way.

On the red carpet for the premiere, the actor wore a black Bottega Veneta dress from the label’s spring/summer 2024 collection, and the off-the-shoulder bustier construction was reminiscent of Princess Di’s. Debicki wisely skipped the pearl choker, which would have looked costume-y, and accessorised with Manolo Blahnik BB pumps.

In season five of The Crown, Debicki sports a recreation of the famous look in one of the episodes. “When people in my life found out that I was going to play this part, this was the dress that everyone texted me about,” Debicki previously told Vogue of the famous LBD. Something tells us she’ll get a lot of texts about this outfit, too.
