Slipping from boundary-pushing movement of the ’80s and ’90s, championed by the likes of Issey Miyake and Calvin Klein, to become a broad concept referring to anything rendered in black and white, minimalism has experienced a bit of an identity crisis. British fashion designer Phoebe Philo was one of the first contemporary designers to kick-start the new minimalist revolution. Taking the reigns at Céline in 2008, Philo went onto create some of the decade’s most agenda-setting styles that are still coveted to this day. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s The Row also led the charge with its more stripped-back approach to fashion, that prioritised construction, timeless design and luxurious fabrications over fleeting trends.

Skip ahead 15 years and the minimalist market is booming. Helped along by the trend-setting powers of social media and growing pressure on the industry to create collections that will stand the test of time, the list of brands continues to grow.
