Leave it to Bella Hadid to steal the show at the 2017 Met Gala, wearing a glittering catsuit by none other than Alexander Wang. (After all, if there is one person who can translate Hadid’s steamy rocker style to the red carpet, it’s Wang.) “It was exciting to do a bodysuit for the Met, because I felt that it was something that hasn’t been explored,” Wang says—perfect for the night’s avant-garde dress code. Inspired by the goth-meets-glam catsuits from his Fall 2017 collection, the designer produced the curve-hugging, scoop-back piece for Hadid with several elevating details. “This look is a more amplified version, done in lace with allover beading and embroidery down to the shoe,” he says. “And really shows off Bella’s incredible body.” Fun fact to know? Hadid was actually sewn into the catsuit.

As for Hadid, she felt that formal attire with a bit of feline ferocity aligned with her smoldering off-duty aesthetic. “I love a sexy look, so I knew Alex was going to do that for me,” she says. “When I saw the sketch it was exactly what he told me and what we envisioned!” Another sartorial factor that Wang and Hadid have in common? They both love a standout supermodel moment. Hadid’s red carpet icons include “Cindy, Linda, and all the majors,” while one of Wang’s all-time favorite people to dress is Gisele Bündchen, one of this year’s Met Gala cochairs. “Dressing Gisele is such a huge pleasure because I absolutely adore her, and she looks great in everything. I’ve dressed her in two completely different ways, and she makes it all so easy.” As for the Wang-Hadid union on display last night? It will surely be one to remember.
