Queen Elizabeth’s Surprising, All-American Breakfast

Despite having access to the finest food and china in all the land, Queen Elizabeth’s dietary preferences are pretty plain: grilled fish, dark chocolate, vegetables. But, as it turns out, her breakfast may be the simplest of all.

In a new interview with Marie Claire, a former royal chef reveals how the British monarch starts her day: with a bowl of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes. Sometimes the Queen doesn’t even use a bowl—apparently, the chef says, she’ll eat it straight out of a “plastic yellow Tupperware container.”

There’s a lot to literally and physically digest here. First, there is the fact that the Queen eats the same breakfast as your grandpa who has been wearing the same khaki pants, since, like, 1972. Then there’s the fact that she eats it out of Tupperware. Don’t get us wrong, we’ve eaten many a sad desk lunch out of Tupperware—but that’s the point! We’re us and she’s, well . . . Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.

So yes, insert the “royals, they’re just like us!” clause here. But most important, this proves that no matter what station in life you rise to, you will never escape plastic container meals, and worse, the dreaded battle of trying to, shudder, find the right lid size. In this world, nothing can be certain—except death, taxes, and Tupperware.
