From The September Issue to The First Monday in May, big-screen releases which delve into the inner workings of Vogue – how the magazine is put together, how covers are selected, what goes on behind the scenes at the brand’s glitziest events – have long been a staple of the fashion documentary subgenre. And now, a juicy new release is about to join its ranks: In Vogue: The 90s, a six-part retrospective of some of the most jaw-dropping moments from this tumultuous and transformative decade in fashion, as it played out in the pages of the publication.

Due to stream on Disney+, the series will take inspiration from the Vogue podcast series of the same name, which was broadcast back in 2020. Winding the clock back to 1990, it dissected the era’s most enduring trends and charted the rise of its biggest stars. Among the endlessly fascinating topics examined were the birth of the supermodel, the prevalence of grunge, the irresistible glamour of Tom Ford’s Gucci, the explosive collision of hip hop and fashion, the rapidly changing nature of red-carpet style, and the legacies of London-based renegades like John Galliano and Alexander McQueen.

A documentary on the '90s

The series’s synopsis promises that it’ll tell “the definitive story of the fashion industry in the ’90s through the eyes of Vogue editors, Hamish Bowles, Edward Enninful, Tonne Goodman and Anna Wintour. Packed with some of the most influential names across fashion, film and politics, In Vogue: The 90s is a thrilling journey across continents and through 10 years that changed fashion forever. Hollywood. Grunge. The Met Gala. The globalisation of American fashion. Hip hop. Each episode in this six-part series centres on a defining ’90s moment.”

As for who you should expect to see weighing in on ’90s fashion, as it was celebrated in Vogue? Well, everyone from Sarah Jessica Parker and Naomi Campbell to Victoria Beckham, Nicole Kidman, Miuccia Prada, Kim Kardashian, Gwyneth Paltrow, Claudia Schiffer, Marc Jacobs, Missy Elliott, Mary J Blige, Elizabeth Hurley, Hillary Clinton, Linda Evangelista, Jenny Shimizu, Tom Ford and Tyson Beckford, naturally – as revealed in the splashy first trailer.

Fittingly, the show will hit screens in the midst of fashion month, with the first three episodes dropping during London Fashion Week on 13 September, and the final three during Milan on 20 September. Get ready for a heady dose of nostalgia – and, in the meantime, make sure to brush up on your ’90s fashion history by bingeing the other recent releases which dive deep into this extraordinary decade, from Apple TV+’s The Super Models. Here’s a preview of what’s to come.
