Bangs don't always have to be a post-breakup dramatic moment. If you pick one that works for your hair type, face shape and length—whether bold or blunt, choppy or tousled or long and wispy—bangs are a great way to upgrade your look without having to sacrifice length. If you're looking to experiment with your strands, celebrity hairstylists Justine Marjan and Mike Desir have their official advice: do it.

There are a few things you need to assess before you choose your fringe. “Face shape, cowlicks, hair texture, your overall haircut and your commitment to styling are all aspects that need to be taken into consideration before cutting bangs,” says Marjan. Marjan reinforces that bangs need maintenance, so you need to keep your daily schedule in mind too. “Bangs grow out fast and require a little extra effort in the morning. If you’re someone who prefers to wash-and-go as opposed to blowdrying or styling your hair, they may not be a great option for you,” she says. Here are the bangs/fringe hairstyles which the stylists predict you will see a lot of in 2021.

The ’90s wispy bangs

“I think we will see a lot more long, wispy ’90s inspired bangs. I love them as they feel more realistic than a curtain bang, which require a lot of styling,” says Marjan. They are soft bangs that are lightly feathered towards the end, and work great if you have fine hair and don't want to commit to a full, thick fringe. You can get as blunt or sparse or thin as you want, but you'll want to make sure you have enough forehead visible through the hair to keep the bangs wispy. "Square shapes would look great with a side-swept bang as this can add softness to the face. Heart-shaped look amazing with a longer wispy bang to complement their features and open up their lips and jawline,” explains Marjan.

Curly bangs

If you have curly strands, Desir suggests getting inspired by the flower power generation. "1970s-style curly bangs bring a touch of freshness to any haircut. This retro look adapts to all types of curls. It works as it adds shorter locks around the face that enhance the shape of their natural curls,” says Desir.

A long, tapered curtain fringe

You can play with volume and length of a curtain fringe to truly make it your own style. While some curtain fringes need daily styling, a long tapered curtain fringe requires no maintenance says Desir. “You can let it grow and split it in half, or put it to the side when it gets too long. Since they are natural bangs, there’s no need for straighteners. And if you want to keep your bangs intact, you can redo them every two to three weeks,” says Desir. “Rounder face shapes look great with curtain bangs as they can narrow the face and frame the eyes and cheekbones," he says.

Micro bangs

A shorter version of typical bangs, Desir says we will see a lot of micro or baby bangs this year.
“This fringe is mainly suitable for thin and oval faces,” he says. While other bangs fall over your eyes, baby bangs put all your features on display. Remember, a shorter fringe will need more maintenance though as it can easily get greasy.
