Our quest for beautiful locks will lead us to try anything and everything, even a jade comb. From a bevy of concoctions to hair tools that can be used in the comfort of your home, the options are plenty. One of the trending treatments is the aforementioned jade comb—yes, from your face rollers and gua-shas, this stone has found its way into hair care too. We decided to try this out for ourselves and this is the result.

First impressions

For the purpose of this review, I’ve used the jade comb by House of Beauty. At first glance, this looks like a quant relic from the Victorian era. Not unsurprisingly, it’s rather heavy for a comb—seeing as how it is made of stone. Unlike a regular comb, this also has rather big teeth—designed to stimulate pressure points on the scalp

What it promises

The comb has been designed as a scalp massage tool which helps boost blood circulation and eventually hair health. The weight of the comb is intended to stimulate the scalp, leading to better hair growth and texture.

How it should be used

According to the experts, this comb—or any other comb should not be used from front to back as that can give you a receding hairline. Instead, it is recommended that you part your hair in the middle and use this along the scalp in a downward motion. This should be done every night and should end with an inverted head massage—which involves flipping your head down and then running the comb from the nape of your neck to your forehead. You can also pair this tool with an oil for best results.

The expert view

According to Dr. Madhuri Agarwal, dermatologist and founder, Yavana Aesthetics Clinic, hair loss is a complicated condition caused by multiple factors like lifestyle, hormonal changes, environmental factors and nutrition. “There’s no scientific paper backing the fact that a jade or any other comb can boost circulation or hair growth.” However, both Ayurveda and Chinese medicine have extensive literature on pressure points and how they can be used to release blockages and enable a smooth flow of energy throughout the body. Neha Premjee, Ayurveda expert and founder, Ayurvedic Body Transformation explains that jade, like many other crystals and minerals, it has its own energy. "Jade is known to have healing properties and cleanses and unblocks energy. Due to its high frequency, jade is associated with various health benefits including better blood circulation. While jade doesn't directly help with hair growth, it stimulates blood flow, which helps the overall health of your hair." She does add though that jade isn’t a magical material—rather it assists in better health by clearing blockages.

My personal experience

I used this comb for about 14 days. It is said that jade can be used both hot and cold. Since I was trying this at the peak of summer, I felt that it works best when done alternate days. The first time I used it, I also ended up applying too much pressure and hurt myself. It is stone after all, so I’d suggest starting with light to medium pressure and then working your way up. I also didn’t use it along with an oil because I wanted to see the results of just the comb. Considering the season, it’s preferred that you use this along with a cooling oil like coconut to reduce friction.

The results

Two weeks is too brief a time to speak about how this can help with hair growth, but I can definitely say that my hair looked shinier after a few days. This—just like an oil massage—works on the meridian points on the head, facilitating blood and subsequently oxygen flow towards the scalp. It also makes for a relaxing ritual to end the day. Making this a part of my regular routine had me oiling my hair more often which probably added to the better texture I was seeing.

The verdict

Hair is a reflection of your inner health—a sum total of your lifestyle and genetics. This comb will certainly aid your quest for better hair—but don’t expect miracles if the basics like diet, sleep and stress are not addressed. It works best when added as part of a routine that is consistent and disciplined.
