The pre-engagement clothing

As soon as news broke that Lady Diana Spencer had been dating Prince Charles, paparazzi began trailing the future royal—including photographing her at her job at the Young England Kindergarten School in Pimlico wearing blousy floral dresses and cashmere V-neck jumpers. In one particularly famous shot from 1980 recreated by Corrin in The Crown, she wore a diaphanous pale-blue skirt in the nursery’s garden – causing a scandal at the time due to the fact that her legs were visible through the fabric.

The wedding dresses

Just two days before her spectacular ’80s wedding to Prince Charles at St Paul’s, Diana joined her future husband for a last rehearsal in a periwinkle and lilac dress. While recreating the scene at Winchester Cathedral, Corrin appeared in a remarkably similar look covered by a khaki mackintosh coat. Meanwhile, for the ceremony itself, The Crown’s costume designers worked with the Emanuels, who designed Diana’s actual wedding dress, to replicate the gown from the 1981 wedding exactly—even going so far as to use the original patterns.

The tour wardrobe

Less than 18 months after their marriage, Prince Charles and Diana undertook a six-week tour of Australia in 1983 with nine-month-old Prince William in tow. The couple visited Perth—where Diana wore a fuchsia polka-dotted dress by Donald Campbell and matching hat by John Boyd—as well as Uluru, where she was photographed in a cream sundress. Corrin appeared in precise remakes of both looks while shooting Netflix’s take on the Commonwealth visit in Almería, Spain.

The London gowns

To film Prince Charles’s birthday at the Royal Opera House in 1987, Corrin donned a bespoke purple and gold dress that called to mind a Catherine Walker style Diana had worn at Cannes earlier in the year. Meanwhile, for a ceremony for Barnardo’s at the Savoy, The Crown’s costume designers sourced a one-shouldered floral dress for Corrin to wear—an amalgamation of a number of asymmetric gowns designed for Diana by Walker in the late ’80s.

The New York looks

In a particularly starry moment, Diana wore an iridescent Victor Edelstein gown to the Brooklyn Academy of Music during her visit to New York in 1989. Corrin was photographed in a near-identical champagne dress when filming the event on set in Manchester. Paparazzi also captured Corrin filming in a candy-coloured houndstooth suit – one of Diana’s wardrobe staples in the late ’80s—in what is believed to be a recreation of the late Princess’s much-publicised visit to an AIDS clinic on the Lower East Side.
