Meet the next generation of designers who are taking India to the global runway

Student designers from Inter National Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD) and London School of Trends (LST) took New York Fashion Week ’22 by storm and we’re stoked

India, a land best known for its storied legacy, ethnic diversity, and impeccable artistry, continues to serve as an eternal muse for many. Labels and designers from far and wide are holding our nation’s heritage at the crux of their story, but only a few manage to truly create a cultural dialogue between India and the world. This time around, students from Inter National Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD) and London School of Trends (LST) did more than that – not only did they honour India’s art, but also gave it a voice, a platform, and an evocative layer of couture that is going to string emotions and empower people for years to come. And when two leading schools in the realm of fashion renowned for offering world-class education and opportunities come together for a showcase, it goes without saying that a scene-stealing show is what awaits the audience, which is exactly what happened at the New York Fashion Week ‘22 when the students took the stage.

“Our aim is to provide our students true exposure and skills to excel in their careers. The collaboration of INIFD X LST at NYFW is a testimony of the same and this partnership is helping the INIFD students with various opportunities at the global forefront across New York, London, Milan and Paris to name a few. I’m incredibly proud of all the student designers who worked hard to source the required materials and create a beautiful collection despite facing difficult situations professionally and personally due to the pandemic,” said Anil Khosla, CEO of INIFD.

A celebration of Indian craftsmanship at New York Fashion Week 2022

On 9th September 2022, the 8th season of the school’s showcase at the NYFW saw a burgeoning group of designers from INIFD and LST coming together to present the Indian Fashion Trunk. Mentored by Fashion Expert Gintare Jankuniene, HOD Fashion Design at London School of Trends, the showcase featured 54 garments; all of which reflected distinct design sensibilities and artistry from 54 different cities of India. Futuristic in nature yet traditional in soul, the collection indeed serves as a beautiful glimpse at where the fashion industry is headed towards.

When asked about the reason behind choosing India as inspiration, Sunny Somra, Founder and Director of London School of Trends, said, “It’s our 8th season at NYFW, and presenting Indian fabrics and crafts through the vision and creativity of our students is our way of showing the world all the hidden gems that makes India special.” To which, Ritu Kochhar, Director of INIFD, added, “Indian Fashion Trunk’s deconstructed designs depict the rich culture, indigenous craftsmanship, artful designs and textiles that makes the different states of India. I am extremely proud of the student designers who have worked hard in these difficult times to give their best shot.”
