Biden sticking in race could be ‘untenable’ for Democrats in tight races: Tim Ryan

.

Former Democratic Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan said President Joe Biden‘s vulnerable position at the top of the Democratic ticket could cause more House Democrats to call for him to step aside.

Ryan, who unsuccessfully ran for Senate in 2022, was one of the first prominent Democrats to call for Biden to step aside from the campaign, and warned the number of Democrats publicly calling on the president to drop out could increase, while speaking on Fox’s Fox News Sunday.

“From what I’m hearing from rank and file members of Congress, you saw a couple come out this weekend, Angie Craig, who’s in a swing district up in Minnesota — Minnesota is now in play,” Ryan said. “I think you’re gonna see a significant amount of pressure — whether it’s today or tomorrow, sometime this week — as the members come back that this may be untenable for them to all want to run under a Biden ticket, because it’s going to be it’s going to drag everybody else down.”

“And I think that’s a major, major concern for [House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY)], who’s a phenomenal leader, but I think his members, donors, activists around the country are very, very concerned. So I think you’ll see a lot more of that this week,” he added.

Five House Democrats, including Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN), have called on Biden to step aside from the race against former President Donald Trump. The uproar over Biden’s age comes after a disastrous debate performance last month which has caused concern in the Democratic Party over his age and mental acuity.

In the other chamber of Congress, Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) is reportedly attempting to gather other Senate Democrats to call on Biden to leave the presidential race after the shaky debate performance. No senator has publicly said Biden should step down, as of Sunday.

Despite growing calls to step aside, Biden has firmly maintained he will stay in the race until the end.
