Trump prepared to make VP announcement on first day of RNC

.

Former President Donald Trump will announce his running mate on Monday after months of anticipation and speculation.

Fox News’s Bret Baier said Trump told him that he will announce his vice presidential nominee on Monday as the Republican National Convention begins in Milwaukee.

“He did confirm that he will make a VP choice today, and he said, ‘Bret, there’s other surprises to come,’ though I don’t know what that means,” Baier said.

Baier also confirmed the vice presidential nominee will be announced publicly.

The reported finalists to be Trump’s running mate include Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND), among others. Speaking on The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show on Friday, Trump said his final decision on his running mate will come down to his “instinct,” but he added that the people he has considered are “terrific people.”

Trump must make the announcement by Wednesday to allow the party to nominate the ticket for November. Trump’s yet-to-be-named running mate will make a speech Wednesday evening, on the third night of the convention. The former President’s son, Donald Trump Jr., will speak before the vice presidential nominee’s speech.

The Republican National Convention and Trump’s running mate decision come after the former president was the target of an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The incident resulted in the death of one rally attendee, Corey Comperatore, 50, and injuries to Trump and others as a gunman opened fire.

The expected announcement of his running mate will occur hours after the classified documents case against Trump was dismissed by a federal judge.

Trump is scheduled to face sentencing for his conviction in New York, which could put more of a spotlight on the former president’s running mate if Trump is sentenced to jail time before the election.
