Harford County Sheriff’s Office releases sketch of suspect in Rachel Morin case

Rachel Morin’s mother is urging people to look, listen and think back to August to help crack her daughter’s murder case that is now more than six months old.

“I can’t live with pain for the rest of my life, like, I can’t do that. There has to be something to help us to move forward,” Patty Morin told 11 News. “We just really need to find this guy. Like, I’m so tired of crying. I’m so tired of feeling sad, and I’m so tired.”

New details emerged Monday, including a sketch of a potential suspect. The Harford County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging the public to view the sketch, as they believe there are people who can provide information.

Detectives believe the killer may have been in the area days before Rachel Morin’s killing on Aug. 6 during her evening jog on the Ma & Pa Trail in Bel Air. Investigators said witnesses reported seeing the man lurking in and around the trail.

“I would say (he was seen during the) last two weeks in July, leading into August, in and around that area, and that makes us believe that he was here for at least some time beforehand, and that may help the public identify this person,” Harford County sheriff’s Capt. Andrew Lane told 11 News.

Investigators said Rachel Morin was snatched off the path and dragged her into the woods. Her body was found in a culvert.

“Most people who use that trail frequently don’t even know that they’re there, they’re well hidden, so obviously, he knew that the culvert was there and he knew most likely that it was hidden from the trail,” Lane told 11 News.

The sheriff’s office says the investigation has led them to seven different states with 10 federal, state and local agencies assisting. Thousands of bilingual flyers have been distributed in Maryland and California.

“We need we need to find this person. We need to be able to have some kind of resolution so we can have just some kind of process for healing,” Patty Morin told 11 News. “He’s just going to continue to do it because he thinks he can get away with it, and someone else is going to feel this pain that we’re feeling — and it shouldn’t be that way.”

Patty Morin said people are always asking what they can do to help. She said her answer has three parts: One, look at the sketch, listen to the new information and if something rings a bell, call the tip line. Two, be vigilant and aware of your surroundings, as no one is safe until this suspect is caught. And, three, donate to the reward fund in the hopes that more money might convince someone who knows something to come forward.

“Catching this person is not going to make my sorrow go away. It’s not going to make my grief go away. I’ve lost the daughter. I can’t bring her back. Nobody can bring her back. But it will prevent him from hurting somebody else,” Patty Morin told 11 News.

Anyone with information on Morin’s killing is asked to call the Harford County Sheriff’s Office at 410-836-7788 or email a tip to investigators at [email protected]. The reward stands at $35,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

The sheriff’s office has also created a special edition of their “Into the Sheriff’s Spotlight” podcast that provides more details and updates on the case.
