Educator of the Week: Dawson Jowers

This week’s Educator of the Week, which is brought to you by the Tennessee Education Lottery, is Dawson Jowers, an eighth grade social studies teacher and head coach for middle school basketball at Decatur County Middle School.

This is Jowers first year of teaching. His favorite thing about teaching is the interactions he gets to have with the students and the close relationships he’s built with other teachers so far.

Jowers became a teacher because of his enjoyment of helping young people.

“I just hope they learn the stuff that I learned when I was here: Be a good person just like you’d be a good student, make a difference as much as you can in life, and hope that they get everything they want out of life,” Jowers said.

Jowers says his students are the backbone of what the country will be, and he enjoys being a positive role model to guide them along the right path.

“It feels great. Some days you wonder, ‘Am I doing the right things? Am I as good a teacher as some of these pictures that’ve been here for 30 years?’ At least I know that somebody is seeing that I know a little bit of what I am doing, and that keeps me motivated to keep going and keep me at being better each and every day,” Jowers said.

Jowers also says his inspiration to become a teacher came from the teachers who helped motivate him to become the best he could be and push him to college.

Jowers  is now eligible for the Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month award.
