Trey Smith’s first-ever football camp

JACKSON, Tenn.—The one thing we love to see is when someone you watch grows to become something great and gives back.

Not because you asked them, not because they are forced to but because they truly care about where they came from and want to see everyone around them live out their dreams. Just like they did.

On Saturday, June 22, two time Super Bowl Champion and USJ Bruin Alumni, Trey Smith hosted his first ever football camp.

It took place at Kirkland Field. Trey wanted to share his knowledge of the game he has and give it to the next generation.

However Trey was not alone, he brought along plenty of help to make sure this camp was successful.

“Man it’s the first football camp, just wanted to bring some back to Jackson. It’s a lot of football knowledge on this field, a lot of former Tennessee Volunteers, NFL coaching experience, NFL scouting experience out here right now, a lot of former NFL players as well. Just trying to figure out a way to give back to Jackson and let the kids have a little bit of fun in this heat,” said Trey Smith, NFL Super Bowl Champion, Kansas City Chiefs.

The camp started off with elementary kids, then after a couple of hours made the transition to the middle school and high school student athletes. The great part about this camp is that it didn’t matter if you were a beginner or advanced at the craft. Today it was all about the fundamentals.

“Man, it’s just basically agility drills you know a lot of times, especially with these younger kids, they’re not coordinated yet, some guys might have not had intros to anything with coordination and agility work, so just trying to get them exposed a little bit and just trying to build good habits. And are second session right now, we have more positional skills so younger guys aren’t really regulated to one position right now, so just give them an opportunity to try different things out,” Smith said.

Trey also put this camp on for the community as well, giving kids a chance to get out and enjoy themselves, not just with the game of football but with their peers as well.

So the coaches and players that knew Trey growing up, know he requires one big thing when you step on the field with him.

“Man energy, it’s so much energy out here man, they’re just having fun improving and they get to touch Trey you know. When they get out here, it’s going to inspire them to do, you know with God given ability that they have to get there. He always preaches education. He always preaches hard work and it’s a beautiful situation, said Nick Stamper, Assistant Athletic Director/Strength and Condition at USJ.

After a long hot day with lots of hydration, agility drills, catching and chasing each other around. There’s something Trey wants everyone to take from this camp and it’s more than just one thing that will benefit them going forward.

”Hard Work, no let me take that back. Faith and hard work. I cant put just one thing on it,” Stamper said.

“Just that they have fun, these young kids have fun, older kids just some skills and some things they can bring towards their craft for the season coming up,” Smith said.

Smith also went on to say, that you can expect this to be a yearly thing that he’ll keep bringing back to Jackson.
