Man charged with murder in fatal shooting near downtown Jackson

JACKSON, Tenn. — A suspect charged with first degree murder appeared in Jackson City Court on Wednesday morning.

47-year-old Johnny Lofton is accused of murder, stemming from a fatal shooting that occurred earlier this year.

A warrant states around 11:15 p.m. on April 24, Jackson Police responded to a 911 call and found a victim with multiple gunshot wounds inside a shed at the 100 block of Barr Avenue near downtown Jackson. The warrant shows that the victim died on April 26 due to his injuries.

According to the warrant, the victim’s wife told police she heard several gunshots outside their residence, and stated she observed a black male known to her only as “Fly” walking away from the shed with a pistol.

The warrant states that she told police “Fly” lived under a nearby bridge. Officers visited this location and made contact with a male laying on a mattress under the bridge. The warrant states a firearm was found near the mattress. According to the warrant, the victim’s wife positively identified him as the same man she saw walking away from the shed.

“Fly” — later identified as Johnny Andre Lofton — was arrested and booked into the Madison County jail.

According to the warrant, shell casings collected from the crime scene were consistent with the firearm that officers recovered from under the bridge.

During court proceedings Wednesday, Lofton’s case was reset to July 31 at 9:30 a.m.

Records available online indicate he currently remains in custody at the Madison County jail.
