One local town welcomes home a college baseball champion

HUNTINGDON, Tenn.—A celebration is held in one local town in honor of a college baseball champion.

The Town of Huntingdon celebrated one of its own this morning as Hunter Ensley returned to his hometown after his team made UT Volunteers history by winning the first-ever baseball national title in this year’s Men’s College World Series.

Ensley, who is number 9 on the UT Volunteers men’s baseball team, played a pivotal role in assisting his team to a championship win. In a memorable play, Ensley avoided his opponents’ catcher and narrowly scored a run at the plate.

A celebration was held at 11 this morning along East Main Street as the area was transformed to honor Ensley, who was a baseball player and graduate of Huntingdon High School.

In a special presentation, the Mayor of Huntingdon, Nina Smothers presented Ensley with the “Pinnacle of Excellence” award.

“Growing up here, you know, coming to the Christmas parades and everything, I never really thought I’d have one for myself. It’s pretty incredible to be up here and celebrate it with you guys here in this town,” said Hunter Ensley, NCAA Baseball National Champion.

Ensley plays outfield for the University of Tennessee Volunteers baseball team and is majoring in recreation and sport management.
