Educator of the Week: Sarah Foust

It’s time now to recognize this week’s Educator of the Week, brought to you by the Tennessee Education Lottery.

Sarah Foust is a 9th grade English teacher at Humboldt Junior/Senior High School.

This is her first year as an educator, but her desire to teach started much earlier.

“I wanted to be a teacher for a long time, even when I was in high school,” Foust said. “I wanted to teach German, but my degree is in English. I love English. If there’s one person that wants to wake up in the morning at 8 a.m. and write an essay, it’s me.”

Foust also shares her classroom’s current focus.

“Right now we’re working on writing, and writing isn’t fun for everybody. I’m just hoping they start to kind of get a lot of writing,” said Foust. “We’ve been working on an essay this week, and they’re really getting the flow of it, they’re really enjoying it. I just want them to have a lot of writing, and reading and learning.”

Foust then mentioned the best part of her role as educator.

“The kids, it’s always gonna be the kids. Especially when they’re figuring stuff out, they’re good at it, they know they’re good at it, their eyes light up, they’re confident with it. It’s building that confidence that I like so much. That’s the best part of it.”

For those hoping to become educators in the future, Foust has encouragement.

“It’s a scary step to make, but go with your gut, always,” she said. “If you feel in your heart, it’s what you’re called to do, because this is a calling, just jump into it.”

Foust followed her calling to teach and shares her story.

“I knew in 2020 that I wanted to be a teacher, but I was scared to take that step, and then early in this year, I was like, ‘You know what? Time’s gonna pass anyway, you might as well do what you want to do,’ so I am and I love it. It’s the best decision I’ve made in a long time.”

Foust is now eligible for the Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month award.
