How to identify and avoid rental scams

JACKSON, Tenn. — Moving is always a stressful project and the threat of a rental scam can make it even worse.

Scams range from paying a deposit and never getting the keys, paying to view the home, and false ads for rental properties.

Scammers will steal photos and list homes that are not for rent. Some scammers will even take applications and fees for a house that’s not theirs.

To avoid rental scams, be wary of lower-than-usual prices and do your research.

Search the listing and information online and see the property in person. You can also verify the property owner’s information.

If the landlord refuses to provide ID, you could be dealing with a scammer.

You can also contact a licensed real estate agent to see who owns a property or check the county property appraiser’s website.

“We’re seeing about two to three reports a week in the area of West Tennessee. Especially, Madison County, Hardeman County and some of those surrounding other counties,” said Toddnetta Trice, communications specialist with the Better Business Bureau.

Evidence shows that younger people are most likely to be victims.

The Apartment List Survey found that those who are 19-29 years old are 42% more likely to be victims.
